Patron sensed disrespect at county fair

Body

Dear Editor:
My husband and I had not attended the Hamilton County Fair for well over 20 years and have moved back to the area recently after a 13-year absence. Friends invited us to join them at the trailer races on Friday evening.
As we stood in line to purchase tickets for the race, a woman approached me with information about a political firm called 2000 Mules. I told her I wasn’t interested in hearing about it. She continued to thrust the information at me and I told her again very distinctly that I was not interested and she finally walked away.
It was always my understanding that people selling goods or dispensing information at the fair were required to obtain floor space where those interested COULD APPROACH THEM to learn more about their products or information. We didn’t appreciate being hassled by politics when we had come seeking a pleasurable evening with friends, but that was just the beginning.
After we had taken our seats in the bleachers, I looked across the track and saw a truck with a flag attached to it. The flag said “F*** Biden.” We were shocked but hoped that the truck was just a support vehicle for one of the competing entrants. Surely the truck wouldn’t be permitted to compete at this family event where children made up nearly half of the audience!!
I can’t even begin to tell you the level of disgust we felt when we saw that vehicle pulling on to the track, allowed to compete with not only the profanity-laced flag flying, but also an anatomically correct naked female inflatable dummy bobbing in the bed of the pickup. It’s not hard to see from the events of the past several years, in particular the “Me Too” movement, the results of decades of objectifying the female anatomy. When this kind of  behavior is condoned by an event such as the county fair, it lends an air of legitimacy to that indecency. Children see adults laughing and cheering and they form the idea that it’s okay to say and do things like that. They don’t see the disrespect.
Fly your flag for the political candidate of your choice. That is your right as an American, but surely the fair board has some kind of guidelines in place to prevent profanity, disrespect and indecency at a family event, and if they don’t, they absolutely should! Everyone enjoys good, clean fun, but this was neither good nor clean. I doubt we will attend the fair next year. We are discovering that the Hamilton County we returned to is not the same one we left 13 years ago.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathie Klute,
Aurora
