Pro-choice versus Pro-life, let’s define the terms

Body

Dear Editor:
This is rightfully a polarizing issue in our country especially after the overturning of Roe v Wade. However, the terms thrown around in the media are often misleading and it is described in euphemisms; hiding the true meaning behind a more socially acceptable and fluffy term that leads people to support a cause that they don’t truly understand.
Let’s define some terms. Human life begins once the egg is fertilized by the sperm; two cells become one cell and from that one cell only a human being can result. Abortion -- loss of a pregnancy, by natural or intentional means. Medical abortion -- intentional killing of another human being. Spontaneous abortion “miscarriage” -- unfortunate loss of a pregnancy/child by natural means. Pro-life -- openness to life at all stages, providing shelter for the homeless, clothes for the naked, and food for the hungry.
In a society that is all about inclusivity and protecting the vulnerable, it is appalling that people fail to make the connection that this single cell is a person that has no voice. Once this truth is grasped, it becomes natural that intentional abortion is an encroachment on life and kills a person that does not have a voice. Once we ignore this truth, then we will fail to protect the most vulnerable in our society.
What started with the unborn, naturally proceeds to the elderly and then to the special needs population. Many countries champion that they have eliminated Down Syndrome, but the sad and heart-wrenching truth is that these countries have simply killed these precious lives while they were in the womb.
We must come together as brothers and sisters, as a community, and as a country to protect the unborn, celebrate life, and provide unconditional support for mothers, their unborn children, and their families. Life is to be celebrated, not condemned or eliminated.
