‘A good old-fashioned winter storm’
It’s been awhile since residents in Hamilton County have seen a significant winter storm in the form of several inches of powdery white snow that blanketed the streets, canceled school and provided perfect snowball fight material.
Luckily for most involved, the central Nebraska area and much of the western part of the state was hit with a winter blast Wednesday and Thursday, amounting to anywhere from four to seven inches locally and upwards of 22 inches around Custer County.
“We had one of the most significant winter storms we’ve had in a while across most of Nebraska and really the central plains in our region,” said Mike Moritz, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Hastings.

Egg prices soaring in Hamilton County

People are counting their eggs more carefully after price increases have rocked grocery shopping lists all over the nation.
Prices on large class shell eggs have increased 238 percent, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, from December 2021 to December 2022.
With every community feeling the impact, egg producers and sellers in Hamilton County have reacted to the inflation and consistent demand for the key food item.
“People will come to us and say, ‘You have eggs?’” egg producer and Aurora High School ag teacher Tony Sigler said. “You would think that we had like gold nuggets for sale here because people are in such dire need for them.”

Hampton swats East Butler late
Despite seemingly nothing going Hampton’s way after a huge first quarter start, the Hawks found a way.
Hampton overcame a pair of second half technical fouls to defeat East Butler 44-43 in the 7-10 matchup of the CRC tournament Saturday evening played at York University.
The win for Hampton can be broken down into three portions – the Gavin Gilmore domination, the Lillian Dose consistency and the Neveah Lukassen heroics. In all, the Hawk trio scored 40 of the team’s 44 points on the night.

Lindburg, Storm rally past Exeter-Milligan
High Plains continued its winning ways in the opening round of the CRC tournament, keeping things interesting all the way through.
The Lady Storm scored the game’s final 10 points, including seven from Hailey Lindburg, as High Plains ousted Exeter-Milligan 44-35 in the 5-12 matchup of the CRC tournament played Saturday at York University.
High Plains coach Mack Alspaugh had a relieved grin on his face after the game, proud of how his girls played down the stretch in another tight game.
