Heavyweight Business
In the last several seasons, the Aurora wrestling team has landed athletes in the finals at the NSAA state wrestling championships and senior Jack Allen looks to be another prime candidate for 2022-23. Aurora wrestling and all other area sports teams are featured in the News-Register’s annual winter sports preview edition.

 

Unified Bowling brings Aurora students together 
The Aurora High School Unified Bowling team placed third at the district competition at York’s Sunset Bowl and Lounge, completing its fourth year, with this being the first year for coach and special education teacher Ella Aksamit. 
Aksamit remarked on how the team has improved over the years and furthered the goal of bringing students from general and special education together. 
“Being a special education teacher, it’s one thing getting to interact and see kids grow in that aspect, but it’s another getting to watch a lot of my students participate in bowling and socialize,” Aksamit said. “Even simple things like going to the concession stands themselves, ordering food, paying for it and...

 

New event growing in 3rd year
The Hamilton County Ag Society hosted its third annual Craft, Toy, Gun Show over the weekend. 
The show, complete with a wide array of vendors, from all three categories, brought in a large crowd and earmarked another holiday in the books for area residents.
“We felt that it was a very good turnout,” Ag Society President Justin Hermanson said. “Saturday, we estimated probably around 500 in attendance and then Sunday, somewhere about half of that. So overall, I think both the Ag Society and the vendors were happy with that turnout.”

 

Lady Huskies win Lakeview Invite Friday
Aurora’s girls wrestling team rocketed out of the gate Friday, winning the Columbus Lakeview Invite in a razor-close team race. 
The Lady Huskies totaled 97 points in the second-year event, one point ahead of the host Lakeview Vikings in a seven-team race. 
Aurora coach Derek Keasling was pleased with what he saw from the girls in a season-opening event. 
“We are very pleased with the effort that the girls had on the mat Friday,” he said. We can really see the results of the off-season wrestling this summer. There are still several things that we need to work in and get better at.”

 

Giltner’s physicality too much for High Plains
The celebration for Giltner’s basketball team, and it’s first-year coach, was a long time coming. 
The Hornets were more physical and sound throughout the night as Giltner picked up a 45-34 win at High Plains Friday, moving to 2-0 on the season. 
Giltner coach Dane McConnell was pumped up following the game, saying over and over how proud he was of his guys and putting together a full game. 
“I’ve been waiting for a long time for these boys to have a win like this where they come in and fight for everything,” McConnell said.
