Rotary Club’s hazardous waste collection day a success

It was a feel-good day at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds Saturday as volunteers combined to collect an estimated 24,000 pounds of hazardous waste, computer components and paper ready for shredding at the Aurora Rotary Club’s Hazardous Waste Collection Day.
Approximately 150 vehicles, many loaded with paint, pesticides, aerosols and other hazardous materials saved for proper disposal, rolled through the collection area in what event organizers said was an overwhelming success.
“We did this about three years ago, prior to COVID, and took in about 6,000 pounds of pesticides, latex paints and aerosols,” noted Denise McGovern-Gallagher, executive director of Grand Island Area Clean Community System. “I would say we were probably pretty close to the 16,000 pound mark this year because it hasn’t been done for the last three years.
