60 Years Ago – 1960
Charles F. Adams was installed Wednesday as Rotary Governor of District 565 by Gov. Thomas D. Rinde of Fremont, the outgoing officer. The installation took place at a special dinner meeting and reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. Adams at the high school cafeteria.
Gary G. Berck, fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Berck of Marquette, returned June 18 aboard the cargo ship USS Alcor to Norfolk, Va., after a tour of duty with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. The Alcor visited ports in Spain, France and Italy while operating with the Fleet.
50 Years Ago – 1970
A car belonging to a York resident was reported stolen from a downtown Aurora street last Thursday. Harley Conway told the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office that a 1967 Buick belonging to him had been parked in front of the H&M Gun Shop and when he went to get it, the car was gone. The stolen auto was valued at around $2,215. The sheriff’s office is investigating the theft and area officers and the Nebraska State Patrol is on the lookout for the missing car.
Harry Olson of Phillips, his brother, Alex Olson of Martin, S.D. and their wives recently enjoyed a visit with their mother, Mrs. Sofia Olson in Ottebol, Sweden. Harry had not seen his mother for 53 years. The two couples flew to Oslo, Norway and then traveled by train to Ottebol, Sweden for the visit with Mrs. Olson, who is 95 years of age and with the Olson brothers’ three brothers and two sisters also living in Sweden.
40 Years Ago – 1980
Sonja S. Zaruba of Aurora has been appointed to serve as associate county judge for Hamilton County effective on July 1. Mrs. Zaruba will serve a two-year term. She is the first woman to serve a judgeship in the history of Hamilton County. Her appointment by Curtis H. Evans, presiding judge was approved by Robert T. Cattle, Jr. and Myrl D. Edstrom, county judges for the Fifth Judicial District of Nebraska.
Kevin Penner of Aurora and Kay Blase of Hordville are among the All-Star Basketball Classic players that will be reporting to training camps soon. The 1980 Nebraska Coaches Association/Coca Cola All-Star Basketball Classic will be Saturday, July 12 in the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Penner is a member of the South All-Stars. Blase is a member of the girls South All-Stars.
30 Years Ago – 1990
Dr. Leroy Wilch, guidance counselor at Santee High School near Niobrara in Knox County the past two years, is the new superintendent of the Marquette Public School. He was hired last week at a special meeting of the Marquette Board of Education and started his new duties on Monday, July 2. He succeeds Chris Effken who resigned to become superintendent of Nemaha Valley Public Schools at Cook after a two year stay at Marquette. Wilch was one of about 10 applicants for the Marquette job.
Padgett Business Services, headquartered in Athens, Ga., has announced the opening of a new office in Aurora, locally owned and operated by Jay Nylander. Nylander’s office is at 1222 L St. Nylander has 16 years of public and corporate accounting experience after first starting with the Lincoln office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co., CPA’s. He most recently held a controller’s position with The Iams Company in Aurora.
20 Years Ago – 2000
It’s not a “30”. Rather a “continued on...” The term “30” in newspaper terms, is the end of the story. For Butch Furse, selling the Aurora News-Register on July 1 meant a minimal break in the action, switching gears to a new role. Continuing to another page in his life. Nearly 150 friends, family members and fellow newspaper professionals surprised Furse with a luncheon “roast”. Allen Beermann, executive director of the Nebraska Press Association, was master of ceremonies for the program.
Cindy Jacobsen is retiring from Pinnacle Bank after 25 years of service. Jacobsen has been the proof machine operator for most of her 25 years and also answers telephone calls in the bookkeeping department. She started working as a teller for the bank after graduating from Aurora High School. The bank was then located in the Professional Building, located next to the present bank building.
10 Years Ago – 2010
No suspects have been named in connection with a case of possible arson at two homes still under construction in Aurora’s Robin Estates Subdivision. Aurora Police Chief Godfrey Brokenrope said an anonymous caller reported fire at approximately 3 a.m. Thursday in two of the 10 houses in the subdivision, which is under construction and has no tenants. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered that one fire had gone out, but another was still burning inside one of the homes. Firefighters were called out again at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday to douse hot spots that were discovered in the second home.
A woman who served as the first president of the Aurora Alumni Association and an Aurora couple that has opened their home to more than 500 children the past 48 years were the latest inductees into the Aurora High School Alumni Hall of Fame. Edna Sands Peterson Dahlstedt and Donna and Johnny Goertzen were recognized at the alumni banquet, held annually during A’ROR’N Days. Dahlstedt was instrumental in organizing the Aurora Alumni Association back in 1949, and served as its first president. Donna (Blackburn) Goertzen, class of 1955 and Johnny Goertzen, class of 1950, have been involved in child care and foster care since 1962. After graduation, Johnny served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 then returned home to work at Farmers Union Creamery. Donna worked at Hamilton Telephone.
