Corn mash spill causes slippery situation
Driver of 18-wheeler cited for not reporting spill
A spill of a large amount of distiller’s corn mash caused a sticky and slippery situation at the intersection of Highways 14 and 34 in Aurora Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately, however, there were no accidents associated with the incident even though it took some time to clean it up.
Aurora Police Chief Paul Graham reports the spill was called in to dispatch at 2:10 p.m. shortly after it occurred. He said the driver of the 18-wheeler hauling the mash had stepped hard on the brakes when another vehicle turned in front of him, causing part of the load to spill over the cab onto the roadway.
Graham said the driver apparently didn’t realize how much mash had been spilled and continued on his way, but was later tracked down and cited. He said drivers are legally responsible for their loads and the driver should have stopped and reported the spill.
Police had to do traffic control while crews put sand on the mash to provide traction for vehicles and then cleaned up the mess. He said trying to wash it away would only make matters worse.
