A simple block of zebrawood sat in the Hordville industrial arts room in the 1970s. There it was a staple that the high school shop teacher, Phil Downs, would show each incoming class.
As time went on and the school changed and merged the simple piece of wood was relegated to a new home under the stage in the school’s old gymnasium.
As the school was nearing demolition, three alumni -- Rod Blase, Matt Means and Mark Means -- were on a mission to salvage what they could from the fixtures.
“One Saturday in early 2021, I was in the old Hordville school,” Blase recalled. “We were in the industrial arts room, which was on the stage end of the old gymnasium. The old gym was converted to two classrooms and an industrial arts room back in the 70s.”
