Thank you, vets

Once a year is not enough.
As we prepare to collectively tip our hat in thanks to military veterans past and present on Veteran’s Day, there is a powerful sense of patriotism in the air. Folks here in the Heartland genuinely appreciate the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform over the years, as well as the sacrifices made by those left here at home.
What they did matters, then and now. Regardless of what their role was, what military branch they served in, whether they stepped foot on foreign soil or carried a weapon, all veterans answered the call to serve and for that we cannot say thank you often enough.
This week’s edition reflects that sentiment in spades, and hearts. It’s an absolute privilege to publish names and photos of local area veterans, shining the spotlight where it is most deserved. It’s also a pleasure to offer veterans a chance to tell their stories in detail, though most would humbly defer if truth be told.
This week’s edition shares the military experiences of several local veterans including Pastor David Feddern, Chance Phifer and Sen. Loren Lippincott. We appreciate their service immensely, as well as their willingness to share their story.
At a time when there is so much division in our nation, and especially our world, Veteran’s Day is a time to unite. Personally, I get goose bumps whenever a crowd comes to its feet as one to salute the men and women who have served on our behalf. Whether it’s at a Veteran’s Day program, sporting event, county fair, A’ROR’N Days parade, Husker game or whatever, that sense of patriotism and shared support gets me every time. It makes me proud to be an American, and I know I’m not alone.
The News-Register shares a community thank you to veterans in this week’s edition and will be on hand to cover Veteran’s Day ceremonies for publication next week as well. It’s important not only for veterans to be handed a microphone, but for all of us to really listen and take to heart the messages they have to share.
Regardless of their role, we owe all veterans a genuine salute, and an ear if they have the time and desire to share their service memories.
