Slow rains stir renewed concern on rural roads

Body

Dear Editor:
First off I want to say how extremely happy I was to receive the abundance of rain we got and how it came, slow with no run off.  However, I had to travel the country roads as I have my mom to help and go to work.
Last Wednesday when I went to work I was so mad with our country road situation that I took a picture and posted it on Facebook, writing my caption with the adrenaline pumping, hoping it would get some reaction and it did. It did get to where I was hoping it would go, but some of the responses weren’t clarified very well.
For many years now we country people have gone to commissioner meetings and called the superintendent trying to get somewhere with the road situation, getting nowhere. Since we finally have a new superintendent I have not had to try and call him since he has been in office because we have had not much winter moisture and what spring we had was harder rains, so the roads were not too bad. This slow rain was a different story.  The Facebook post did get back to Mr. Jeremy Brandt with people sharing and he sent me a message through messenger and I gave him a call and we had a nice visit.
First off I want to thank him for just not shrugging off the post but getting in contact with me. I was truly hoping that he would be different then our previous one and after our conversation I have high hopes. I know for a fact he has a big job ahead of him since the roads have been neglected for so many years and you can’t just fix them in a short amount of time.
He explained to me his plans, but because they are having trouble getting gravel, they may get two loads and get shut off, that is such discouraging news. With Hamilton County having over 1,000 miles to cover and to do the roads right it takes five loads per mile, it is going to be very hard for him to get anywhere when we are so far behind. He also told me he has 19 employees for the county.  Figuring that up, each employee has about 52 miles to maintain. He has encouraged me to tell people if they have problems or issues to please let him know by calling the county yards. You may have to leave a message, but he wants to address everyone who calls.
I want to give Mr. Brandt a chance and hope that the supply and demand gets better so we can see the improvement.
