Nebraska needs a movement to stop pornography
Dear Editor:
Last week in my letter to the editor I touched on the mental health crisis. I found some stats to share.
Nebraska ranks 7th in the US per capita for the crime of rape. Yes, here in nice conservative Nebraska, who doesn’t lift a finger to swat a fly! Every 68 seconds in the US, sexual assault occurs; every nine minutes being a child under the age of 12.
Child Care Service agencies found 57,329 sexually molested nationwide annually under the age 12, that 93 percent of them were abused by a family member or close acquaintance. From RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Networks) statistics show mental health issues arise in those who have been sexually molested. Some 38 percent experience problems functioning at work, while 37 percent experience family/friend problems, including getting into arguments more frequently than before, struggling with trust, or not feeling as close to them as before the crime. An estimated 79 percent of survivors who were victimized by a family member, close friend or acquaintance experience emotional issues from moderate to severe distress, or problems at work or school. This study did not include children under 12. No wonder we have a mental health crisis with the young!
I’m sure you already know that Grand Island is the capital for sex-trafficking in this state. In very recent times, many of us had to fight the sex standards set to be in our schools which were totally inappropriate for our kids. I also sat in a meeting of our state library board and librarians were saying they had to keep sexually explicit books in their libraries to keep everyone happy! Really?!
Don’t we care about the young family members at home? Nothing like bringing fire into the house, expecting no damage! Where is the common sense?
All this to say, it’s time to stop the main source of these heinous crimes! Let’s start a movement in the state of Nebraska to stop pornography!
