Ricky "Rick" Braun

Rick Lynn Braun, nicknamed “Brownie” was born Sept. 4,1963 in Henderson, to Irvin and Doris Braun. He went home to His Heavenly Father on November 5, 2017 (All Saints Sunday) surrounded by his loving wife, Cindy, and kids; Morgan and Landon.  Rick passed away following a courageous battle with MS.
Family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. at Southlake Village Rehabilitation & Care Center on Thursday, Nov. 16.
Memorial Service for Rick will be at Southwood Lutheran Church on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 9:30 a.m. (Southwood Lutheran, 4301 Wilderness Blvd., Lincoln).
Rick was raised on a farm just outside of Hampton, where he graduated from Hampton High School, class of 1981. In high school, he acquired the nickname “Whoosh” for his basketball shot. He attended Southeast Community College-Milford and graduated in 1989 shortly after he was united in marriage to Cindy Rathje on May, 27.  


Bertha Arndt

Bertha Arndt, age 100, of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 13 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Aurora.  Pastor Wayne Oblender will officiate.  Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Bertha Marie Arndt, the daughter of John and Rosina (Wagner) Schaffert, was born south of Aurora, on the family farm on June 26, 1917 and passed away in Aurora, on November 7, 2017, at the age of 100.
She grew up south of Aurora, where she helped her parents on the farm.  Bertha attended school through the 12th grade.  Bertha was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.   


Justin A. Davenport

Justin A. Davenport, 34, of Grand Island died Sunday, November 5, 2017, at his home.
Services will be held Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., at Third City Christian Church, Grand Island, with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating.  Visitation hours will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, at the church. Interment will be at Westlawn Cemetery.  The family requests no floral tributes. Memorial contributions are suggested towards scholarship funds for their two children.  Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.
Justin Adam Davenport was born Jan. 30, 1983, at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of James and Helen (Crays) Davenport.  He grew up and received his education in Aurora, graduating from Aurora High School with the class of 2001.  He received his Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Wayne State College in Wayne.


Pamela E. (Olson) Clayton

Pamela E (Olson) Clayton, 64, of St. Joseph, Mo., passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care.
Pam was born Dec. 23, 1952 to the late Donald and Mary (Thompson)  Olson in Grand Island.
She was a 1971 graduate of Aurora High School and earned an Associate’s Degree from Grand Island Business School.
She was a member of PEO, Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi.
In her career she followed her passion of interior design, worked at The Colony House in St. Joseph and co-founded Cherry Hill Interiors in Aurora. Later she joined the marketing department at the Better Business Bureau where she served for 20 years.
In addition to her parents Ms. Clayton was preceded in death by a brother; Ben Olson, and grand-nephew; Carson Neville.


Daniel Weeks

Daniel Weeks of Aurora, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 at home at the age of 81, surrounded by family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Beacon of Hope Church in Grand Island. Pastor Bill Rowland will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia at 1:30 p.m. Military honors will be rendered by the Scotia Honor Guard and U.S. Navy.
Daniel was born to George and Florence (Beck) Weeks on Nov. 28, 1935 near Scotia. He graduated from Scotia Consolidated Schools in May 1954 and in December of that same year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country from 1955-1958 active duty and from 1958-1962 in the reserves. He was honorably discharged in December 1962.
He married Judith Klinginsmith on December 3, 1960. To this union 4 children were born, Kathryn, Robin, Elizabeth, and Matthew.


Marvin Peters

Marvin L. Peters, age 87, of Henderson, died Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Henderson. He was born December 28, 1929 in rural Hamilton County to George and Anna (Hiebert) Peters.
Marvin worked as a farmer for most of his life, and raised cattle in Hamilton County. He worked as a truck driver until retirement, and was a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Henderson, where he enjoyed running the sound system, and sang in the Men’s Chorus. On February 28, 1951 Marvin was united in marriage to Elda Quiring in Henderson.


Richard L. "Joe" Holmes

Richard L.“Joe” Holmes, 84, of Central City died Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Merrick Medical Center.  As per Joe’s wishes, there will be no services.
Joe was born on June 9, 1933 to Merle J. and Elizabeth (Yetter) Holmes in Fullerton.  He grew up in Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1951.  He then joined the United States Air Force on August 12, 1952.  He retired from the Air Force on September 30, 1973 and bought a home in Central City, and has lived here ever since.  He spent the next 21 years traveling around the world and United States.  He wintered in Harlingen, Texas for over 15 years. Joe worked at Safeway in Central City until it closed and then went to work at the Aurora Mall until he retired in June of 1995.
He married Rose Ann Shelton at the Fairview United Methodist Church on July 22, 1956.  Rose Ann died  on March 2, 1996. For the remaining 21 years of his life, Joe spent his time with a special friend Shirley Thomas.


Garry Rudy

Garry Rudy, age 75, of Aurora, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at the Memorial Hospital.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 21 at the Stockham Community Church.  Rev. Paul Nauman will officiate.  Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora.   Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.  Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at
Garry Eugene Rudy, the son of Kenneth George and Glena (Wagner) Rudy, was born in Grand Island, on March 23, 1942 and passed away at Aurora, on October 17, 2017 at the age of 75.


Debra "Deb, Debbie" L. Vanderheiden

Debra “Deb, Debbie” L. Vanderheiden, age 61, of Aurora, died on Monday, October 16, 2017, at her home.
A Funeral service is planned for Saturday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Aurora, followed immediately by burial at the Aurora Cemetery and returning for a luncheon at the church. Rev. Karla Sheffy will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m.  at the United Methodist Church, 1104 A Street.  In lieu of flowers, Deb requested that memorials be made to the Heartland Cancer Foundation or Aurora Adopt-A-Pet in her memory.  Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.   Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at


Ronald G. Anderson

Ronald G. Anderson of Sarasota, FL passed away October 11, 2017.  He was born Dec. 7, 1945.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery, Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 2 p.m.
He is survived by a daughter, Tami Jo (Anderson) Reynolds, Cumming, GA; son, Peter (Teresa) Orser, Halifax, Nova Scotia and sister Joyce Anderson (Rod) Dolton, Omaha; grandchildren Pation, Preston, and Parker (Reynolds); Madison and Hilary (Orser); many in-laws, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by parents Oscar G. and Alice M. Anderson.
