Robert F. Thompson

Robert F. Thompson, 88, of St. Paul died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Randy Dilts will officiate.
 Burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
 A visitation was held Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
 Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
 Robert was born Dec. 10, 1925 to John and Lora (Skipper) Thompson in St. Liberty, Mo.
 He grew up in Missouri and attended a country school near Princeton and graduated.
 Robert was united in marriage to Shirley Lawson on Nov. 7, 1953 in Exline, Iowa. To this union five children were born.
The couple moved to Unionville, Mo. and several towns in Central Nebraska. They lived in Phillips for several years and in 1974 the couple moved to St. Libory where they owned the Lone Tree Gas Station.


Janette Hancock

Janette Lucille Hancock, 82, of Shamokin Dam, Penn. passed on Friday afternoon, September 12, 2014, at the Manor at Penn Village, in Selinsgrove.
She was born December 26, 1931, the daughter of Hiram Leroy and Ethel Mae England in Phillips, Hamilton County, Nebraska. On October 25, 1953, she married the love of her life, Dyer J. Hancock and was married 51 years until he passed.
Janette was valedictorian of her 1949 graduating class at Phillips High School in Phillips.
She was a teacher at a one-room school house in the early 1950’s. She worked for Simplicity Patterns and Control Data “Seagate” in Omaha, for many years.
She was a 1994 graduated from Metropolitan Community College with an Associate in Business Administration Degree.
Janette was a loyal member of the Church of the Nazarene in Millard, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was loved dearly by the congregation.


Eleanor J. Strotman

Eleanor J. Strotman, 88, of Central City formerly of Aurora, died on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at Long Term Care in Central City.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City with Rev. Msgr. Nelson Newman officiating.  Visitation will be at the church on Friday, September 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. wake service.  Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of the arrangements.  Condolences may be sent to the family at


Karen Yvonne Hendrickson

Karen Yvonne Hendrickson of Sun City West, Ariz. passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 after a long brave fight with cancer.  Although she has departed, she will remain in our hearts and a model of courage and grace to her family and friends.
Karen was born on March 13, 1944 in Aurora, to Claude and Cecile Smith.  She grew up on the farm with five brothers and extended family close by.  She married Robert Hendrickson in 1962 and they enjoyed 52 years together raising a family, and living throughout the western USA.
She was preceded in death by her father Claude.
She is survived by her husband Robert; children Nick and Shelley (Jamey); granddaughter Cecilia; mother Cecile Smith; brothers Larry (Mary), Ron, Jim (Karen), Ken (Karry), Phil (Peg); and many family and friends who loved her dearly.


Henry E. Roberts

Henry E. Roberts, 88, from Hastings, graduate of Aurora High School Class of 1944 and resident of Calumet City, Ill., died on Aug. 18, 2014.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan and Kim; one grandson, Charles; and two great-grandchildren, James and Jack; and sister, Betty.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 61-1/2 years, Joan E. (Bangston), parents Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Roberts, three  brothers, Donald, Wayne and Robert.
He served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post 330.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society, Private services were held at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.


Eldora Charlotte Gustafson Nyberg Nelson

Eldora Charlotte Gustafson Nyberg Nelson, 96, died on Sept. 3, 2014 at her daughter’s home in Wauconda, Ill.  A funeral service will be held Sept. 13 at Life Bridge Community Church, Wauconda, Ill. at 11 a.m. There will be opportunity to greet the family from 10 to 11 a.m. and also during a luncheon following the service.
Burial will be held on Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Swede Plain Cemetery near Stromsburg, followed by a luncheon for family and friends. Memorials may be directed to Trinity International University, Deerfield, Ill. or to the Evangelical Free Church of America, Minneapolis, Minn.  Solt Funeral Home of Polk and Central City are in charge of the local arrangements. Clayton Kauffman

Clayton Kauffman, 75, of Grand Island, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the Aurora United Methodist Church.  Pastor Mary Scott officiated. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Clayton Leon Kauffman, the son of Wesley Blaine and Helga Marie (Andersen) Kauffman, was born in Marquette, on April 5, 1939.


Rodney Johnson

Rodney Johnson, 77, of Phillips, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Mahlon Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery. Rodney Alden Johnson, the son of Raymond and Dorthy (Lewis) Johnson, was born at Inavale, on Aug. 19, 1937.
 Rodney moved to various towns growing up. He graduated from Campbell High School.
 Following his graduation, he served his country in the United States Army. Following his discharge, he worked various jobs before starting to farm with his brother and uncle in the early 1960s.


Ed Wilkins

Ed Wilkins, age 85, of Aurora, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 4 at the Aurora United Methodist Church.  Refreshments will be served at the church immediately following the service.  Private family interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Edward Carlyle Wilkins, the son of Lyal and Helen M. (Macek) Wilkins, was born at the family ranch in Cherry County, Nebraska on June 10, 1929 and passed away in Grand Island, on September 1, 2014, at the age of 85.


Dennis Powell

Dennis Powell, 70, of Ogallala, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Dennis was born June 25, 1944 in Grant, the son of Sterling and Ella Mae (maiden name: Ray) Powell. He graduated from Grant High School in 1962.
Dennis attended McCook Junior College for a year and a half. In 1964 he married his high school sweetheart Karen S. Ronneker at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant. On July 26, 2014, they celebrated fifty years of marriage. The couple made their home in Imperial and Dennis was employed at the family business Powell Motors. The business was sold in 1981 and then they purchased Broadway Liquor Store in Imperial.
In the summer of 1989 the couple moved to Ogallala where Dennis was employed as a salesman for Schmidt Motors. In 1991 Dennis began work with Hipp Wholesale Distributing. He then worked for Cash Wa Distributing from 2002 until retiring in 2011.
