Marvin 'Russ' Russell

Marvin D. “Russ” Russell, 75, of Central City, died peacefully Saturday, Aug., 1, 2015 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City. Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home (downtown) location.
Russ was born on Oct. 27, 1939 to Frank and Gertrude (Scott) Russell of Marquette. He grew up in the Marquette area and graduated fro St. Paul High School in 1957.  He entered the United States Army right our of high school.  He transferred to the Air National Guard in Arizona, for several years after that. While in Arizona he worked and took college classes, later moving to Colorado, still taking classes and working for the City of Denver, eventually receiving his degree, always working, saving money, and buying properties to improve to resell.

LeRoy Hopkins

LeRoy Hopkins, age 97, of Seaside, Oregon, formerly of Aurora, graduated to heaven on Aug. 5, 2015.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora.  Pastor Bob Gannon and Rev. Paul Nauman will officiate.  A private family burial will be at 9 a.m. at the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. LeRoy Benjamin Hopkins, the son of Benjamin and Gertrude Hopkins, was born in Stapleton, Nebr., on July 24, 1918 and graduated to heaven at Seaside, Oregon on Aug. 5, 2015, at the age of 97.

Gerald Curtis Friesen

Gerald C. (Jerry) Friesen passed away July 27, 2015, in Geneva, at the age of 86 years, 5 months, 11 days.  He was born February 16, 1929, to David P. and Anna (Tessman) Friesen in Henderson.  The second of four children, Jerry grew up on a farm south of Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School in 1946.  After graduation he farmed until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1951.  He completed radar school in Texas and served his country in Japan during the Korean War.  Upon his discharge in 1953, he used his radio repair skills at Springer’s Appliance in Aurora where he was a TV technician.  Later he opened his own business, Jerry’s Radio and TV, where he repaired and sold TV’s, stereos, and antennas.

Jeanice Nitz

Jeanice Nitz, age 85, formerly of Aurora, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the Hearthstone in York.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 25 at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Pastor Barb Johnson will officiate. Jeanice L. Nitz, the daughter of Ivan L. and Blanche F. (Sweeney) Sutton, was born in Silver Creek, on November 25, 1929 and passed away in York, on July 21, 2015, at the age of 85.
She grew up on a farm near rural Silver Creek and attended Stromsburg High School.
Jeanice was united in marriage to Harold Russell Cole and to that union they had four boys.

Jean Louise Cates, age 66, of Giltner, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2015 at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 24 at the United Methodist Church of Giltner. Rev. Mahlon Richardson will officiate. Interment will be in the Giltner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 418 N. Derby Ave. Giltner.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.  Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Jean Louise Cates, the daughter of William Jack and Norma Jeanne (Benson) Robertshaw, was born in Hastings, on October 6, 1948 and passed away in Giltner, on July 20, 2015, at the age of 66.

Edna Samples, 73, of Aurora, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Memorial Community Care.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, July 20 at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Rev. Bruce Bradley will officiate.

Edna Mary Lou Vinna Samples, the daughter of William and Lucille (Sutton) Norwood, was born in Blythville, Ark. on Jan. 28, 1942.
Edna grew up with her grandmother for the first seven years in Osceolo, Ark.
Edna was married to James H. Samples on Sept. 11, 1975 at Colton, Calif. They lived in Santa Ana and Fontana, Calif. before moving to Nebraska. Jim passed away on May 2, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son-in-law, Stephen Dorsey.

Dale Miller

Dale Miller passed away July 9, 2015 at his home in Mesa, Arizona.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 25 at the Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa. The Wise Choice Cremation and Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dale Ray Miller, the son of Andrew and Irene (Williams) Miller was born in Aurora on March 5, 1940 and passed away at Mesa, Ariz. on July 9, 2015 at the age of 75. Dale grew up on the family farm near Aurora. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1958.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois (Dadey), son Gary and brother Billy.
Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol of Mesa, sons David (Vanessa) and Todd (Joyce) of the Mesa area and their families. He is also survived by his brother John (Pat) Miller of Aurora, sister-in-law Jeanette Ulmer of Pawnee City, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Don 'Red' Ballard

Don ‘Red’ Ballard, age 79, formerly of Giltner, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.

Donald ‘Red’ Ballard, the son of George and Lois (Brewer) Ballard, was born at Lincoln, on October 8, 1935 and passed away in Grand Island, on July 9, 2015, at the age of 79.
Red graduated from Burwell High School. Red was honorable discharged from the U.S. Army after serving from May of 1959 to May of 1962.
