Betty Jean Schmidt

Betty Jean Schmidt, 73, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at her home in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jack Gillam officiating.  Burial will be at 2 p.m., at Concordia Cemetery at Proesser.  Visitation hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Apfel Funeral Home, Grand Island.  Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the family to be designated to an Educators Scholarship Fund.  Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
 Betty Jean Schmidt was born June 18, 1941 in Aurora, the daughter of Rueben E. and Hazel L. (Ryder) Ott.  She grew up in Giltner, graduating from Giltner High School with the class of 1959 as the class valedictorian.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kearney State Teachers College in 1966 and her Master’s Degree in 1976.

Donna Rohrer

Donna Rohrer, age 81, of Aurora passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015, at Memorial Community Care.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.  Inurnment will be in the Phillips Cemetery.   Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials may be made to Memorial Community Care.  Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at www.higbymortuary.com.
 Donna R. Rohrer, the daughter of Clarence and Mattie (Harvey) Moore, was born at Aurora, on October 12, 1933 and passed away at Aurora, on April 2, 2015, at the age of 81.
 She grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School in 1951.

Hadley William (Hap) Fruits

Aurora resident Hadley William (Hap) Fruits, 82, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
In honoring his wished to be cremated there will be no services.  Inurnment will be at he and his wife’s plot on the south side of Aurora Cemetery overlooking the city where they lived for 30 years.  He will await her there.  Cremation arrangements are made by DeWitt Funeral Home in Hastings.
 Memorials are suggested to the Aurora Humane Society.

Vernon Higby

Vernon Higby, age 93, of Aurora, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015, at Memorial Community Care.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 4 at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Pastor Ron Harris will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Vernon Austin Higby, the son of Austin L. and Louise (Stratton) Higby, was born at Aurora, on January 13 1922 and passed away in Aurora, on March 30, 2015, at the age of 93.
Vernon grew up in Aurora, where he graduated from Aurora High School.  He then attended Milford Trade School.  Vernon served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was honorably discharged on December 11, 1945.

A vigil will be held at 7 p.m.,  Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church in Platte Center.
Interment will be in the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery in Platte Center.
Linda Melcher of Monroe died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Columbus Community Hospital.

Houtz G. VanSteenburgh

Houtz G. VanSteenburgh, 60, died of heart disease in his Kingsport, TN home in early March.

Born In Boston, MA on August 3, 1954, the son of Houtz and Dode Steenburg, he was raised in central Nebraska.

After graduating from Aurora High School in 1972, he attended the University Of Nebraska at Lincoln and Gateway Electronics Institute. In 1974, he graduated from Gateway and worked as an electronics technician in Omaha, NE.

Larry D. Ronnfeldt

Larry D. Ronnfeldt, 75, of Central City died on Monday, March 23, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Lincoln.  Services will be Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dale Janzen officiating.  Visitation will be Friday, March 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment is in the Burke Cemetery near Central City.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Kenneth M. Herrold

Kenneth M. Herrold passed away unexpectedly in his home on February 2, at the active age of 92. He was pre-deceased by his wife of sixty-nine years, Marceina Mae Carlson of Aurora who passed away on December 14, 2011. Kenneth was born in York County at the family farm by Bradshaw on November 14, 1922.
He leaves behind his daughter and her husband, Bonnie and Lawrence Schlink of North Carolina, and their three children:  granddaughter Tracy Marie Schlink Koivisto, and husband Shawn,  and great grandson Geoffrey Ford of North Carolina; grandson Toby John Schlink, wife Jennifer, great-granddaughter, Baley Rose and great-grandson Wyatt Chase of North Carolina; grandson Anthony Paul Schlink, wife Audrey, great-granddaughter Ashlyn Paige, her husband Chris Wiedyk, and great-great granddaughter  Angelyn Paige and great-great granddaughter Alyssa Paige Schlink, all of Michigan.

Elmer Dale Robinson

Sutton resident Elmer Dale Robinson, Jr., 68, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015, at the Henderson Care Center in Henderson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 26, 2015, at the Federated Church in Sutton,  with Rev. Harry Cross officiating.  Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton.  Visitation will be Wednesday, from 3-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.  
 Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department.

Alva M. Caster

Alva M. Caster, 83, of Vinton, La. died Sunday, March 15, 2015 in a local hospital.
 Alva was born on December 11, 1931 in Oberlin, Kans. to Myron and Anneta Caster. He loved reading, gardening, and traveling. He attended University of Kansas and graduated with a engineering degree from Colorado School of Mines. He enjoyed a 35 year career as an engineer in the petrochemical industry that took him to places such as Saudi Arabia, India, and around the United States. He proudly served our country in the Army.
