Ernest J. Matthiesen

Ernest J. Matthiesen, 80 of Aurora died Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Clarkson Towers in Omaha.  He now rests in the arms of our Lord and with his son, Steven; his parents; family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island.  Celebrating Mass will be Father Todd Philipsen.  Military honors will be rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the Navy following Mass at the church.  To honor his wishes cremation has taken place.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mr. Matthiesen was born December 15, 1934 to Ernest and Laura (Schaupdach) Matthiesen in Grand Island.


Richard L. Lundquist

Hastings resident, Richard L. Lundquist, 61, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.    
Services will be Thursday, February 19, 2015; at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating.  Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church.  Memorials may be given to Nebraska Rod & Custom Association Scholarship Fund or Faith Lutheran Church (Scholarship Fund).  Private condolences may be sent to the family at  Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family.


Dr. Warren L. Berggren

Dr. Warren L. Berggren died at his home in Golden, Colo., Jan. 30, at age 85. He was surrounded by family and loved ones. Warren is survived by wife Gretchen, children Ruth Berggren and Jeannie Tanski, sisters Janet Jones and Barbara Mohrbacher and four grandchildren.
Born on a farm near Aurora, he graduated from Aurora High School and was elected to the Aurora High Alumni Hall of Fame. He graduated with an M.D. from University of Nebraska, 1955, and a D.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health in 1967. In 1959 he married Dr. Gretchen Glode, in Belgium. They served as medical missionaries to Congo through 1964, commissioned by the Evangelical Free Church of America.


Ingred Holmberg Hedlund

Ingred Holmberg Hedlund, 95, died Jan. 23, 2015 in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was born in Loup City to Einar and Ida Holmberg on May 28, 1919. The family farmed in Loup City and Ceresco areas prior to moving to Hamilton County in 1932.
Ingred graduated from Phillips High School in 1936 and later attended the Evangelical Free Church College in Chicago. She married Rev. John Hedlund at the Monroe EFC in 1940. They served as pastor of several Evangelical Free Churches in the midwest during 62 years of ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John Hedlund in 2002, parents, sisters Marian, Margit (Art) Wagner and Kathryn, brothers Norman, Gerald, and Marvin.


Mindy Mencia

Mindy Allyson Mencia, 35, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at CHI Health St. Francis.
Celebration of life service was held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at All Faiths Funeral Home. Family greeted friends one hour before service time. Burial of ashes was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9 in the Grand Island Cemetery.
Mindy was born Sept. 27, 1979 at Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Ken and Marcia (Kneisel) Bowers.
Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Mario; son, Logan Mencia; her parents, Ken and Marcia Bowers; brother and sister-in-law, Matthew and Kendal Bowers, and their children, Abbey, Lauren, Cooper, Hudson and Owen; personal best friend, Holly Hanson; close friends, Jessica Ramirez and Jessica Leach; in-laws, Alex Mencia, Joel Mencia, Angel and Lupe Mencia and Enrique and Luz Garcia; and a host of friends from Aurora.
Mindy lived in Ohio before moving in 1984 to Aurora, where she graduated from Aurora High School, class of 1997.


Albert Ackerman

Albert Ackerman, age 91, of Aurora, formerly of Stockham, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015, at the Hamilton Manor.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m.., on Thursday, February 12 at Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora.  Rev. Bob Gannon will officiate.   Interment will be in the Stockham Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.   Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at
Albert Julius Ackerman, the son of Martin and Rosina (Schutz) Ackerman, was born at Linton, North Dakota on July 11, 1923 and passed away in Aurora, on February 8, 2015, at the age of 91.


Gary L. Goertzen

Gary Lee Goertzen passed away at the age of 68 in Mesa, Ariz. after an extended illness related to COPD.
He was born in Grant and lived in Paxton and Aurora until graduation in 1965 where he was very active in sports and excelled in most of them and served in the Army in the Vietnam War. He was a salesman in manufactured housing for 30+ years and retired from Ryzex Repair, a bar code equipment sales and service company in 2010.
He was the son of Henry R. Goertzen and Doris Folger. He leaves behind his sister, Terry Orenchick of Mesa, Ariz., with whom he shared a home, and a brother Dennis Goertzen and his wife Pat, from Greeley, Colo., four nieces and one nephew and their children and many friends. He will be missed by all.
He was always a sports enthusiast and loved to watch basketball, golf and baseball. Sports ruled his world!


John M. Green Jr.

John M. Green Jr.  61, of Millard, died Sunday, February 1, 2015, at Bergan Mercy Hospital.  Services will be Friday, February 6, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Curran Funeral Chapel.  The Rev. Sheri Lodel will officiate.  Burial will be in the Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr, with a 1:30 p.m. committal service.  
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday.   
John was an avid Husker fan and the family invites you to show your Husker pride by wearing Husker attire at the funeral service.  Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.  
John was born October 4, 1953, at Hastings.  He was the son of John M. and Barbara (Gerloff) Green Sr.
Survivors of the immediate family include his children and their spouses: Christopher and Amy of Wood River, Phillip of Grand Island, Courtney and Steven of Grand Island, seven grandchildren and one great grandson.


Margaret Mary Fitzgerald

Margaret Mary Fitzgerald of Littleton passed away on January 25, 2015 at age 90.
Margaret was born Dec 1924 in Aurora, to Joseph and Marie Schneider. She grew up with brothers Leo, Bernard, Bob and Jim, graduating from Aurora High School in 1942. Margaret went to nursing school at Creighton University, graduating in 1945.
Margaret moved to Denver, working as a nurse at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital where she met Martin (Marty) Fitzgerald, Jr. They married on June 12, 1948. She went on to work for over 45 years as a Nurse or Nursing Home Administrator.


Sharon Vanosdall

Sharon Vanosdall, age 74, of Grand Island, formerly of Marquette, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Grand Island.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 29 at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Rev. Ron Harris will officiate. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.  Memorials may be made in care of the family.  Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at
Sharon Dee Vanosdall, the daughter of Ray and Carol (Smith) Albin, was born March 27, 1940, at home in Salem, and passed away January 25, 2015, at Grand Island, at the age of 74.
