Shirley “Jean” Holtan passed peacefully on May 12, 2020 in Aurora, at the age of 85.  Jean will be missed by family and friends who will remember her strong spirit and loving and affectionate ways.
The family intends to honor Jean’s memory with gifts and support to the organizations and individuals that provided care and hospice at great risk to themselves during the Covid 19 crisis. Memorials and sentiments can be sent to:  Melanie Holtan, 2404 Parisio Court, Leander, TX  78641. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at
Jean was born in Miami, Florida on October 13, 1934 to Roy Anderson Jones and Bernice (Owens) Jones who both preceded her in death.  She played among the citrus trees with her sister, Alice (Jones) Fredrickson who lives in Tennessee and her brother, Henry “Hank” Jones, who she will join in peace.
Jean was married to Bruce Holtan on June 16, 1967.  They resided in Marquette, where Jean worked at Valley View Country Club, Bonnavilla Homes and also as an operator for Hamilton Telephone before her retirement.  Jean will be joining Bruce in rest at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetary in Marquette with plans for a memorial service later this year.
Jean will be known for many things.  She was a legitimate southern cook whose fried chicken is on record as being the best in all the Midwest.  She raised her family on grits and love. She was also quick to remind any northerner that REAL key lime pie is yellow and not green and the only way to cook is with butter and not margarine.  She was very loving and affectionate.  Getting off the phone was quite a process ending with “I love you sweetie precious beautiful precious love you love you precious and drive safely”.  She was generous with all and loved archeology, history and the beautiful scenery of Europe.  She was fortunate to have taken a number of trips to see the sights she had only dreamed of as a girl.  She taught us all to laugh, love hard, fight for what you know is right and cuss like a sailor when the situation called for it.
Jean’s family is so appreciative for the kind staff at Westfield Quality Care.  They snuck her treats, wore her homemade jewelry with pride, and sat with her in kind and loving prayer as she battled complications of the Covid 19 virus.  They held her hand and made sure they were by her side as she passed over.
Jean has 6 children and was blessed with 20 grandchildren and over 50 great-grandchildren.  Her children include Don Morgan and Cathy Jo (deceased), Susan (Morgan) and Harvey Lipskoch, Lisa (Holtan) and Ken Archer, Laura (Holtan) and Jerry Parsons, Bruce “B.J.” Holtan, and Melanie (Holtan) and Eric Banks.
