Soule, Svoboda come up short of state titles

It wasn't the happy ending High Plains' Dylan Soule or Aurora's Caden Svoboda were looking for.

Both wrestlers lost their respective state championship bouts Saturday afternoon during the NSAA state wrestling championships at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

Soule was looking to cap off a spectacular high school wrestling career in style, but ended up on the wrong end of a 5-3 decision to Plainview's Alizae Mejia.

The Storm senior led the match 2-0 after the first period, but allowed an escape and takedown late in the second to fall behind, 3-2.

From there, Soule tied the match in the third at 3-all after an escape, but gave up a takedown late in the period while looking for his own shot.

Soule's senior season ends with a 40-8 record and 151 career wins.

As for Svoboda, he was against a familiar foe, taking on Bennington's Kael Lauridsen for the third time this season.

The match didn't unfold the way the Husky junior would have liked, suffering takedown after takedown in a 16-5 major decision loss.

Svoboda is now a three-time state medalist and finishes his junior season with a 45-4 record.

Soule and Svoboda were two of the area's five medalists that also include Trevor Kluck (3rd), Jarrett Parsons (3rd) and Brekyn Papineau (5th).
