NRD revisiting controversial Rule 5 on nitrogen regs

A controversial proposal to change the way area farmers apply nitrogen to their fields is back on the agenda for the Upper Big Blue Natural Resource District.
Last September, the Upper Big Blue board voted 16-1 to send a Rule 5 proposal back to the water committee for further study. This rule was presented to restrict nitrate application and require farmers to use nitrification inhibitors to reduce the loss of nitrogen in the soil.
Hundreds of farmers and producers gathered for the public meetings in the summer and fall of 2019 to voice concerns about the lack of on-farm research and what the impact of Rule 5 would have on their operations.
