Bergen property hosts Region 5 Soil Judging Contest

A unique type of contest and learning opportunity took over the Bergen family property near Phillips Thursday.
The family’s land, with help from Mike and Tim Bergen, welcomed the Region 5 Collegiate Soil Judging Contest, hosted through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“It’s similar to high school land judging, but focuses more on the description and characteristics of the soil,” said UNL instructor Becky Young.
“Soil judging provides an opportunity for students to study soils through direct experience in the field. Students learn to describe soil properties, identify different kinds of soils and associated landscape features, and interpret soil information for agriculture and other land uses.”
