Betty Mabon

Betty Mabon, age 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Phillips, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at CHI Health-St. Francis in Grand Island.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 12 at the Phillips United Methodist Church. Pastor Joel Warren will officiate. Interment will be in the Phillips Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Phillips United Methodist Church, 414 3rd Street, Phillips.  Order of the Eastern Star Phillips Chapter #204 ceremony will follow at 7:00. Memorials may be made to the Phillips United Methodist Church or the Eastern Star Phillips Chapter #204. Betty Marie Mabon, the daughter of George and Rosalie (Bartz) Cornelius, was born on a farm southwest of Phillips, on January 25, 1927 and passed away in Grand Island, on March 7, 2018 at the age of 91.
She lived on a farm with her parents, brother Robert and sister Erma.  Her father died when she was 11 years old.  The children, their mother and great uncle Henry Stuhr moved to Phillips where Rosalie worked as the telephone operator.  Betty graduated from Phillips High School in May, 1944.  While in High School she took “normal training,” attended Kearney State Teachers College in the summer of 1944 and taught school for one year.
On June 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to Robert Charles Mabon. They had three sons, James, David and Douglas, and a daughter, Susan.  Douglas died as a small child.  Bob and Betty lived on the family farm located one mile west of Phillips from 1952 to 2007.  They moved to Regency Retirement complex in Grand Island in 2007.  Bob passed away on September 9, 2008.  In 2014 Betty moved to the Bickford Assisted Living facility located in Grand Island.
Betty was very active in the Eastern Star and held numerous state and local offices.  She was also a member of the Phillips United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Doug Mabon; brother, Robert (Esther) Cornelius; sister, Erma (Donald) Bergholz and three brothers-in-law, Irl Mabon, W.C. Mabon, Jr. and Merlin Mabon.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, James (Sallie) Mabon of Greenville, Georgia and David (Terri) Mabon of Phillips; daughter, Susan (Dick) Summers of Gibbon; 6 grandchildren, Jerad C. (Megan) Mabon of Huntsville, Alabama, Aaron C.(Wendy) Mabon of Noonan, Georgia, Dawn M (Mark) Waage of Elkhorn, Derek L. (Deborah) Mabon of Lincoln, Kirk L. (Jen) Summers of Gibbon and Matthew P. (Steph) Summers of David City and 9 great-grandchildren, Bailey and Brett Waage, Jaclyn Mabon, Noah and Skyler Summers, Natalie, Madeleine and Lyla  Summers and Harper Mabon.  She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Marise Hopkins of Grand Island, Carol Mabon of Monument, Colorado and Royce Mabon of Omaha and other family members and a host of friends.
