High Plains state wrestling update

Two High Plains grapplers have punched tickets to the semifinals on the opening day of the Class B state wrestling tournament at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha Thursday evening.

Logan Russell at 106 and Dylan Soule at 152 will compete in the semifinals Friday night after winning a pair of matches Thursday.

Russell won both of his matches on the day with first period pins, spending only 106 seconds total on the mat. He opened the day by defeating Lane Barton of Meridian and followed that up with a victory over Thomas Klemesrud of North Central. Russell will take on Jesse Sauceda of Shelton in Friday night's semis.

As for Soule, he recorded a pinfall and decision victory. He started the tournament with a pinfall over Jonathan Foster of Sutherland and earned a 12-6 decision over Conner Schutz of Elwood. Soule will challenge Bode Jensen of Burwell in the semis.

HPC's two other wrestlers -- Clay Church and Tim Markvicka -- each suffered losses in their respective opening round matches and will compete in the consolation rounds Friday.
