Shirley A. Volquardsen

Shirley A. Volquardsen, 86, of Grand Island, formerly of Cairo, died Thursday, October 5, 2017 with her family at her side.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo.  Reverend Brian Wright will officiate.  A reception and time of fellowship will follow the service.  Burial will be at 1 p.m. in the Shelton Cemetery.  All Faiths Funeral Home of Grand Island is entrusted with arrangements.
Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at the church.
Shirley was born February 19, 1931 at Shelton to Clarence and Hazel (Marks) Doremus.  She grew up and received her education in Shelton.  Shirley also took a business course through Kearney State College and graduated from the Grand Island Beauty School in 1960.
On April 2, 1948 Shirley married Amos A. Ward.  There were three children born to this union, Rick, Jim and Rhonda.  She then married Marvin Leth on June 24, 1956 and they had two children together, Mary and Jan.  Shirley was later united in marriage to Alvin Volquardsen on September 24, 1988.
Shirley was the owner and operator of “Shirley Anne’s Beauty Shop” in Cairo.  She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo and was a longtime member of Ladies Aid and a sponsor of the youth group, Walther League.  She had a love for children and teaching Sunday school.  Her children remember the cinnamon rolls and countless meals they helped her deliver to shut-ins and she was Cub Scout Master for her boys when they were young.  Shirley always enjoyed crocheting and knitting and spending time visiting and attending family gatherings with her children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Rick (Jan) Leth of Cairo, Jim (Pat) Leth of Aurora, Rhonda (Tim) Goodman of Grand Island, Mary Ostermeyer of Omaha and Jan (Matt) Johnson of York; step-children, Randy (Diane) Volquardsen of Omaha, Jerry Volquardsen of Grand Island and Darryl (Denise) Volquardsen of Gibbon; 13 grandchildren, Lori Molzahn, Wendi (Justin) Sanny, Ashli (Tony) Gano, Kimberly Leth (Roger Ladd), Michael (Kristi) Leth, Corey (Sandra) Spiehs, Kellie (Ryan) O’Neill, Anna (Andy) Stapleton, Johnnie (Robyn) Ostermeyer, Robyn (Jim) Bruning, Craig (Kammy) Ostermeyer, Luke Johnson and Libby (Todd) Garrett; 26 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Marvin and Alvin; and seven siblings, Clarence, Walter, Melvin, Donald, Mildred, Elizabeth and Charlotte.
Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran LYF or Moses Comfort Dog Fund.
