John Cates

John Cates, age 73, of Giltner, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the United Methodist Church of Giltner.  Pastor Kathy Uldrich will officiate. Private family inurnment will be in the Giltner Cemetery. Visitation and Viewing will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, 418 N. Derby Ave. Giltner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. John W. Cates, the son of Carlos “C.W.” Warren and Betty Rilene (Morgan) Cates, was born in Cushing, Okla. on May 27, 1944 and passed away in Giltner, on Aug. 31, 2017, at the age of 73.
He grew up in Cushing, Okla.  His family moved to Nebraska and John graduated from Nebraska City High School.  John was united in marriage to Jean Louise Robertshaw on July 2, 1966 at Giltner. John and Jean had two sons: Les and Rex. John worked at the CAAP Ordinance Plant in Grand Island for eight years before going to work at Case/New Holland in Grand Island and retired in 1998 after 25 years of service. Jean passed away on July 20, 2015.
John loved the outdoors and especially all the time he spent hunting and fishing on Bush Island.  He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s ball games and activities. John was a member of the United Methodist Church in Giltner.  
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; father-in-law, William Robershaw and two brothers-in-law, Barry Robertshaw and Jack Robertshaw.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Les Cates and Ammie Holtzen and Rex (Kerry) Cates, all of Giltner; 5 grandchildren, Brittney (Glenn) Bills, John Cates, Colin (Maggie) Cates, Jessica (Jordan) Janzen and Trevor Cates; two great-granddaughters, Kyndall Cates and Adeline Cates and two great-grandsons, Weston Janzen and Liam Bills. He is also survived by three sisters, Neva Jane (Bill) Chatterson of Greeley, Colorado, Vera (Mike) Harrall of Park Hill, Oklahoma and Nancy Detwiler of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Mary Jane) Robertshaw and Tom Robertshaw, all of Giltner; four sisters-in-law, Paula Omel and Peggy (Patrick) Bell, all of Giltner, Jeanne Robertshaw and Christina Robertshaw, both of Aurora; mother-in-law, Norma Robertshaw of Giltner and numerous nieces and nephews.
