Cheryl Dowty

Cheryl Dowty, age 72, of Aurora, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 8 at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.  Jeremy LaBrie will officiate.    Cheryl’s wishes were for people to wear Husker red to the service.  Inurnment will be at later date in the North Platte Cemetery.  Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at
Cheryl E. Dowty, the daughter of Warren and Martha (Love) Hays, was born in Minnesota on March 25, 1945 and passed away in Grand Island, on Aug. 31, 2017, at the age of 72.
Cheryl’s family lived in many different places when she was growing up.  She attended many different schools, but considered Gothenburg her home, since that is where they resided the longest.  At 16, Cheryl moved out on her own and began working.
Cheryl was married to Ed Dowty on June 25, 1971 at Phillipsburg, Kans.  To this union they had four children: Bert, Mr. Ed, Sherry and Darla.  They moved to Aurora, where Cheryl went to work for York Manufacturing and later on they moved to Clarks.  Ed passed away in 1986.  Cheryl moved back to Aurora and went to work as the Dietary Service Manager Wedgewood and Hamilton Manor in Aurora, where she retired in 2015.
Cheryl was an avid Husker fan.  She enjoyed crafting, traveling to every state in the U.S. except for Hawaii and most of all spending time with her grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son at the age of four; five brothers and two sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Bert Sundberg of Grand Island, Sherry (Frank) Rizzo of Colmar, PA and Darla (Darren) Sparr of Aurora; 6 grandchildren, TJ and Nathan Dozier, Kaelin Sparr, Josh Sundberg, Frankie and Megan Rizzo; brother, Jim (Ruth) Hayes of Hastings; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Hays and Ruth Hays and many other relatives and friends.
