Lester was born April 3, 1919 to Rudolf and Ida (Bieck) Ljunggren on a farm north of Harvard.  Lester lived there almost his entire life--only taking time away to serve his country in WWII and briefly after he married Laura Louise Smith on February 10, 1947.  He attended a country school prior to graduating from Giltner High School in 1939.
In 1941 he was one of the first recruits from Hamilton County.  He served in the U S Army with the Army Combat Engineers.  While serving in the Pacific he landed on several islands and traveled from Australia  to the Philippines. His outfit was known as “the butchers” according to radio postings by Tokyo Rose.
He served his country well and was awarded several medals.  Upon his return to Harvard he became a charter member of  Harvard Alan Jones Post #5539 and was the last surviving charter member.
Lester was a life-long farmer raising crops along with milking cows and raising chickens.  He loved raising gardens and saved prized melon seeds to plant the following year.  He loved playing cards and Lester and Laura belonged to a card club for over 50 years.
He and Laura raised three children: Keith (Susan) Ljunggren, Harvard; Mary Jo Ochs, Brighton CO; Peggy (Dennis) Kooyman, Huxley, IA.  Their 10 grandchildren have many stories to tell.  Crystal (Chris) Clinchard, Adrian, Michigan; Jason (Randi) Ochs, Culver City, CA; Jeremy (Andrea) Ochs, Colorado Springs, CO; Charla (Jeb) Brant, Hastings; Julie (Fred) DeMaio, Brighton, CO; Jennifer Ochs, Brighton, CO; Chandra Ljunggren, Lincoln; Nathan (Laura) Kooyman, Blairsburg, IA; Kerri (Nathan) Mead, Winfield, IL; Amber (David) O’Dell, Newton, IA.
