Harland P. Epp

Harland P. Epp age 100 of Aurora, formerly of Henderson, died Saturday, June 03, 2017 at Aurora.
He was born November 21, 1916 in York County to Peter M. and Margaretha (Rempel) Epp on a farm two miles south of Henderson. Harland began school in District 31 and finished the eighth grade in District 62, two miles north of Henderson. When going to school he rode horseback graduating from Henderson High School in 1935.
While growing up he played the banjo with his brother Eldon who played the guitar at church and on various occasions.
Upon his profession of faith, Harland was baptized on June 5th, 1938 by Lillie’s uncle Reverend A.W. Friesen and accepted into the fellowship of the Bethesda Mennonite Church. He was a lifelong and faithful member and served as a church usher.
Harland found the love of his life, Lillie Friesen, and four years later, on April 16, 1939 they were married. To this union were born four children: Joann, Kenneth, Julia and Philip.
Harland and Lillie farmed for sixteen years, until they moved to Henderson in 1955 and started up a grocery store – Epp’s Supermarket. After closing his grocery store Harland was hired as an assistant manager at the Jack & Jill Grocery Store in York. While he worked in York, he worked his forty hours in three days and in his spare time he worked on the house which included digging a small basement by hand and finishing it. His son Philip poured the concrete and built the steps to finish the project. Harland also built a green house, started tomato plants from seed, planted 100 tomato plants and sold them to a local restaurant.
In 1978 Harland took the job as Executive Director and maintenance man at the Henderson Housing Authority for over 26 years until his retirement in 2005. He was then appointed Board Chair on the Board of Commissioners of the Henderson Housing Authority from 2005 until 2010. Harland was also in charge of the Metz Mortuary in Henderson from 1976 until 2005.
He is survived by his children and spouses: Joann and Robert Dick of Aurora, Philip and Roma Epp of Lincoln. His grandchildren include: Jerry and Kathy Dick of Hastings, Judy and Rod Niles of Aurora, Nancy Niles of Grand Island, David and Season Epp of Lincoln; great-grandchildren; Josh and Laura Niles of Claytonia, Brandy and Michael Beavers of Collins, IA, Katie and David Wallis of Cape Girardeau MO, Daniel and Tara Niles of Cozad, David Niles and Fiancée Neleigh of Cozad, Megan Dick of Hastings, E, Dustin Weaver of Austin, TX, Abby Epp of Lincoln, Hunter Epp of Lincoln, Beau Epp of Lincoln; great-great-grandchildren include Sydney Beavers, Wesley Beavers, Thadeus Niles, Taylor Niles, Kaila Wallis, and Linley Wallis.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Lillie, daughter Julia, son Kenneth, great-granddaughter Lily Epp, infant brother Harold, his sister Malinda (Mrs. John R. Doel) and younger brother Eldon.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with the Reverend Jim Voth officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethesda Cemetery following services. Visitation will be held from 1-9 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2017 with his family meeting friends and neighbors from 6-8 p.m. that evening. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Radio Fund.
