Peggy Schlingman - February 07, 2014

Peggy Lois Schlingman, 88, a longtime resident of Island Lakes, Merritt Island, Fla., passed away on Feb. 7, 2014 at home.
Peggy Schlingman was born in Giltner, Nebr. on June 9, 1925, daughter of Adeline (Abel) Benson and Wallace “Bun” Benson. She attended school in Giltner until 1940 and graduated from Hastings High School in 1942. She graduated from Mary Lanning Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and continued her nursing career for many years while raising her family.
On Oct. 19, 1947 she was united in marriage to Carl C. Schlingman in Hastings, Nebr. To this union two sons were born, Steven Schlingman and James Schlingman. The family lived in Nebraska and Colorado and after her husband’s retirement lived in Giltner until spending their remaining years in Florida.
Peggy was dedicated to the Christian Crafters of the North Merritt Island United Methodist Church in which she was recognized for her participation in the creation of 50,000 “Gift of Love” bears donated to local hospitals.
Peggy is survived by her sons, Steve (Bonnie) Schlingman of Merritt Island and James (Carla) Schlingman of Yankton, SD; sister Norma (Bill) Robertshaw of Giltner, NE; brother-in-law Bill (Corwin) Schlingman of Longmont, Colo.; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Carl.
Peggy’s celebration of life will be held at North Merritt Island, FL United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. To honor Mrs. Schlingman’s wishes, cremation and a private family burial at Florida National Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the United Methodist Church Bear Ministry, in care of her church.
