Ken Goertzen - December 20, 2013

Ken Goertzen, age 79, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at the Hamilton Manor.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Monroe Evangelical Free Church near Murphy. The Rev. Marshall Erickson and the Rev. Paul Nauman will officiate. Interment will be at 11 A.M. Saturday prior to the church service at the Mennonite Brethren Cemetery north of Henderson. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made to Christian Resource Center. Kenneth Eugene Goertzen, the son of Isaac and Estalene (Unruh) Goertzen, was born in Hampton on Aug. 27, 1934.
Ken grew up in rural Hampton on a farm. As a teenager he attended Polk Bible Camp, where he realized his need for Savior. Ken was baptized in 1949 and became a member of the Henderson Mennonite Brethren Church. He graduated from Henderson High School and attended Tabor College for one year. Ken volunteered to serve his country for two years as a medical nutritional subject at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo.
On June 5, 1956, Ken was married to Laura Suderman at Hillsboro, Kan. They made their first home near rural Henderson, where Ken farmed. In 1965, they moved to rural Aurora, where he continued to farm. In 1987, they moved into Aurora. Ken and Laura enjoyed spending 14 years in Mesa, Ariz., during the winter months.
Ken served as a deacon and taught Sunday School to various age groups during his adult life. He enjoyed his time volunteering at the Christian Resource Center at Giltner; the Corn Growers Association; Husker Harvest Days and the Edgerton Explorit Center.
Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife, Laura of Aurora; three children, Donovan (Lori) Goertzen of Minneapolis, Minn., Valerie (Lee) Friesen of Lincoln and Rick (Rebecca) Goertzen of Aurora; seven grandchildren, Donovan Paul Goertzen II of Minneapolis, Minn., Lexie Goertzen of Minneapolis, Minn., Jonathan (Charlene) Friesen of Aurora, Landon Friesen of Omaha, Riley (Tricia) Friesen of North Hollywood, Calif., Ryan Goertzen of Aurora and Jack Goertzen of Aurora; great-grandson, Tobin Friesen of Aurora; two brothers, Donald L. (Wanda) Goertzen and Ardean (Shirley) Goertzen all of Lincoln and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, uncles and aunts and great-granddaughter, Lucy Garland Friesen.
