Sylvia Gartner - December 18, 2013Sylvia Gartner, age 99, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Memorial Community Care.
Graveside memorial service will be at 10:30 A.M., Dec. 28 at Blue Valley Cemetery south of Hastings. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at www.higbymortuary.com.
Sylvia Freda Gartner, the daughter of Henry and Antonia (Mysicka) Wehnes was born on a farm near Ayr on Dec. 16, 1914.
She was raised on a farm near Pauline and Ayr. Sylvia attended country school and helped take care of her younger sisters and brothers.
Sylvia was married to Charles Gartner on March 24, 1934, at Smith Center, Kan. Charles passed away in 1960. Sylvia sold the farm and moved to Hastings, where she worked at the Modern Motel & Travel Lodge. She also was a cook at the Good Samaritan Village for several years.
Sylvia was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. She taught Sunday school and helped with vacation Bible school while being a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blue Hill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, son, Roger and five sisters and three brothers.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, William (Karen) Gartner of Gretna and Charlene Coon of Aurora; six grandchildren, Russell Gartner of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Cindy Williams of Hastings, Robert (Rhonda) Coon of Greeley, Colo., Barry (Laura) Coon of Highland Ranch, Colo., Michelle Gartner-Kochanek and Dan Kochanek of Denver, Colo., and Adam (Ashley) Gartner of Omaha and seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Andrew, Nathan, Sarah, Megan, Kinley and Brennan.
