Shirley Lampshire - June 30, 2009Shirley Lampshire, 72, of Hordville, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Central City after a long battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life was held Monday, July 6 at the Hordville Events Center with Rev. Darryl Keeney officiating. Burial was in the Hordville Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.
She was born Sept. 29, 1936 in Salem, Ore. to Ralph and Hazel (Armstrong) Abernathy. During her youth, she lived in Oregon, California, Nevada and Nebraska.
She met her husband, Donald Lampshire, during her senior year of high school. She graduated from Hordville High School in 1955. Don and Shirley were married on April 21, 1957 at the First Baptist Church in Hordville.
She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, Bible School craft director and cookie maker for many people in the community. She and her husband cared for Don’s brother, Calmer, for many years. Working with Calmer’s special needs lead Shirley to become a member of the Association for Retarded Citizens and to coach for the Special Olympics. She was named Nebraska Coach of the Year. She cooked at the High Plains Community School in Hordville for several years and was a member of the Order of Easter Star Willanna Chapter in Polk and held many offices. She was also a member of the Merry Mothers Extension Club and the Baptist Women’s Mission Society.
She enjoyed collecting cookbooks, Santa’s, churches, Tiger Woods and Larry the Gable Guy. She loved working in the family fireworks stand each year, but her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Don of Hordville; children, Donita Lampshire of Kearney; Larry Lampshire of Hordville; and Shawna (Eric) Williams of Central City; grandchildren; great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merlyn and Janice Lampshire of Lincoln; a special cousin, Sandra and Dan Hostler of Grand Island; and special caregiver, Rita Gerlach of Aurora.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Earl and Lorraine Flodman; Deloris and Vergil Flodman; Eugene and Rachel Lampshire; Darlene and Willard Meerkatz, and Calmer Lampshire; niece, Elizabeth Flodman Wolfe; and nephews David Flodman and Gene Meerkatz.
