Lauren Akerson - November 02, 2013Lauren Akerson, 31, of Aurora, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, in York County as the result of a car accident.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Wayne Oblender will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1304 North Highway 14. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lauren Akerson Scholarship Fund. Lauren Elizabeth Akerson, the daughter of Vern and Jennifer (Kniss) Meyer, Jr. was born June 17, 1982, at Scottsbluff.
Lauren grew up in Bayard and graduated from Bayard High School in 2000. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2004.
On July 31, 2004, she was united in marriage to Steve Akerson. Lauren was a second grade teacher for Aurora Public Schools since 2006. She was a volleyball coach at Aurora High School.
Lauren was a member of the Nebraska Education Association, PEO and the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. She coached club volleyball, taught swimming lessons for many summers and was part of Adopt-A-Flower Basket to Beautify Aurora. Lauren also enjoyed reading, shopping, traveling with family and friends and entertaining. She had a special smile and warm personality that made each person who met her feel special.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Jake and Alvina Kniss, and paternal grandparents, Vern and Mary Meyer Sr.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Steve Akerson of Aurora; parents, Vern and Jennifer Meyer of Bayard; two sisters, Katherine Meyer (Trevor Parriott) of Lincoln and Valerie (Kevin) Wolverton of Gering; parents-in-law, Ron & Marsha Akerson of Aurora; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carmen (Anthony) Bohaty of York; two nephews, Nathan and Alec Bohaty; sister -in-law and brother-in-law, Julie (Casey) Steele of Little Rock, Arkansas; two nephews, Logan and Beckett Steele, and niece, Sayler Steele; uncles and aunts, Bob and Signe Kniss of Bayard, Wayne and Cheryl Kniss of Bayard, Mick and Sharon Lemley of Scottsbluff and Steve and Diana Tucker of Arizona. She is also survived by numerous cousins and many friends.
