Louise Merchant - June 24, 2013

Louise Merchant, 97, of Stromsburg, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at Stromsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 29, at the First Baptist Church in Polk. Burial will be in the Arborville Cemetery, Arborville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening.

She was born July 21, 1915, in rural York County to Wilbur and Laura Olivia (Reed) Walkup. Following high school, Louise attended York College for two years obtaining her teaching certificate. She taught school a few years before her marriage to Robert “Bob” Merchant of Arborville. They were married on Feb. 16,1938 at the Shiloh Church near Benedict.
Louise had been actively involved with her husband on the farm. She was the first woman appointed to the Nebraska Corn Board and up until her death, marketed her own corn. During the 60s and 70s she wrote a column for the Polk Progress entitled “Annie’s Corner.” She was the secretary to the Superintendent at Polk Public School for a few years.
Louise began playing the piano for church at age 11. She learned to play the pipe organ and was a church organist nearly all her life. She played for numerous funerals, weddings, and special occasions. She also accompanied many performances of her daughter Louise never missed any of Roger’s high school track meets and helped edit the book Roger wrote about the twins. Louise and Robert hosted several Japanese farm exchange students. Louise enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Japan, South America and the Mediterranean. She enjoyed reading, writing, weaving, and attending her grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include her daughter Margaret (Roger) Clough of Omaha; son Roger (YaXin) Merchant of Polk; grandchildren: Marc (Pam) Clough of Marble Rock, Iowa, Michael (Arlene) Clough, of Urbandale, Iowa, Martin (Amy) Clough of Minneapolis, Minn., Reynold (Tammy) Merchant of Lincoln, Franklyn (Debbie) Merchant of Seymour, Mo., Jennifer (John) Katz of Lincoln, Jessica Nelson of Lincoln, Jeffrey (Margie) Merchant of Lincoln; great-grandchildren include Lindi (Ben) Nelson of Des Moines, Iowa, Robert (Bri) Clough of Hartford, Conn., Katy Clough of West DeMoines, Iowa, Madeline Clough of Urbandale, Iowa, Charlie Clough of Chicago, Ill., Sofie and Bo Clough of Minneapolis, Minn., Tyler Merchant, Amanda (Donnie) Wells, Cathrine Burgess, Sammuel Katz, Addison and Alex Nelson, Samantha and Conner Merchant all of Lincoln, Ashley and Amanda Gage and Eric, Broderick, and Reagan Grace Joyce Merchant of Seymour, Mo.; great-great grandchildren Thomas and Max Nelson of Des Moines, Wyatt Wells of Lincoln and Kensie and Haydon Gage of Seymour.
Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding Louise in death were her parents and husband; five siblings, Glen Walkup, Dwight Walkup, Mable Wright, Claude Walkup, and Pauline Walkup and infant great-grandson Raegan Merchant.
