Steven Leach - May 20, 2013Steven Robert Leach, 57, of Aurora died May 20, 2013. During his three-year struggle with liver disease Steve never gave up and spent his final weeks fighting like hell in hopes of receiving a liver transplant. Steve and his family were incredibly thankful for the skilled and compassionate care that he received from a wide variety of doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists and other medical professionals at the Memorial Community Health Hospital in Aurora and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
The family will receive visitors at the Aurora United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will take place Friday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at the Aurora United Methodist Church. Steve’s wishes were for cremation and the family will inurn his ashes in a private ceremony prior to the memorial service.
Steve was born Jan. 12, 1956, to Robert and Loretta (Schneringer) Leach in Kearney. He was wed to Donelle Leach on Aug. 14, 1976, and they had three children: Grant (married to daughter-in-law Elizabeth), Greta and Sally.
Steve enjoyed two careers during his life, first serving as a police officer with the Aurora Police Department and then joining his father as an independent insurance agent at Leach Insurance Center in 1992 where he worked with his close friend Bobbie Hamit for 21 years. Steve also worked a variety of other jobs including farmhand, tire technician, irrigation well driller, part-time Santa Claus and promotions representative for the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
Steve will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, community involvement and his sense of humor. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing and formerly served as Scoutmaster of Aurora’s Boy Scout Troop 131. He was also an avid supporter of various Aurora High School student activities. Steve spent most of his life as a Republican but later converted to and went on to become chair of the Hamilton County Democratic Party. He adored his granddaughters, Whitney and Abigail, and particularly enjoyed making jokes about his missing toe.
In addition to his parents, wife, children and granddaughters, Steve is survived by sister Suzanne Eckerson (and brother-in-law Charlie), sister Janelle Wright (and brother-in-law Jeff), sister Patricia Leach, his dog Buster and a multitude of friends too numerous to mention.
Steve was preceded in death by his brother-in-law and dear friend Paul “Jerry” Johnston.
The most appropriate tribute that Steve’s surviving friends and family could make would be to register as an organ, tissue and eye donor. This can be done through the website http://donatelife.net. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Prairie Plains Resource Institute, the Aurora United Methodist Church or the Memorial Community Health Hospital Foundation.
