Yvonne M. Berthold - May 20, 2009Yvonne M. Berthold, 89, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island.
A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Mark Cyza celebrating the mass. Burial followed at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.

She was born April 8, 1920 in Nebraska City, the daughter of Ulyssis G. and Mae (Meyer) Garris. She attended St. Mary’s Academy and then attended and graduated from Nebraska City High School.
She married Walter Berthold on May 16, 1940 in St. Francis, Kan.
She was employed at the Bomber Plant at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue during WWII. She also worked at Woolworth’s and St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.
She and her husband owned and operated the Aurora Floral in Aurora from 1952 to 1962 and then the Floret Flower Shop in Grand Island from 1963 to 1971. They moved to Colorado Springs and she worked at Burkhart Greenhouse/Floral and Walker Real Estate before retiring.
They briefly lived in Abilene, Texas and Lincoln before moving to the Lakeview Nursing Home in February 2002.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church/St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lincoln,. She was also a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi.
She was truly a loving mother and spouse who was dedicated to her entire family and her faith. She was a giving person who always put others before herself. As a young girl, she was reared at St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City after her mother passed away at a young age. She later returned to her home with her father and step-mother who raised her and her brothers and sister. In 2001, she was stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease. Even when suffering from Alzheimer’s she remained a friendly and cheerful person enjoying the company of friends and family. Her favorite past-time was collecting and showing family pictures from throughout her life.
Survivors include her children: Judy (Kim) Allen of Arizona City, Ariz., Richard (Barbara) Berthold of Grand Island, Robert L. (Chris) Berthold and wife Chris of Auburn, Calif. and Barbara Lee of Lincoln, Calif; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Verona Bolen of Bolivar, Mo. and Juanita (George) Miller of New Market, Va.; brother-in-law Art Berthold of Lincoln; many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter on July 4, 2002; her parents; an infant son Terry; brothers Robert and John Garris and sister Dorothy Bryant; one great-granddaughter.
