He was active in all sports -- football, basketball and especially American Legion Post #42 baseball. He received the Certificate of Merit from the Nebraska Independent for outstanding work in the field of sports. In 1949 the Legion baseball team was named Class B State Champions with Cheb serving as pitcher. In November of 1949, Cheb was offered a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. During spring training, Cheb sustained an ankle injury and made the decision to return to Aurora rather than spend extensive time not being able to participate in his favorite sport. He was employed as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney in Aurora.
In 1951 he joined the United States Air Force and worked as an Air Policeman with his primary duty station at the 3084th Security Squadron at Westover AFB, Mass. During his service he was also a member of the Stoney Brook Air Force Station Baseball Team. He also received a letter of commendation during his time in service.

In December of 1986 Jerry retired from Mountain Bell and the family returned to Aurora.
In early 1987 Jerry and Pat became owners and operators of J&P Discount Liquors and had the business until it was sold in 1991. While his children were involved in sports, Jerry assisted in many ways with the ball programs.
He loved fishing, camping and boating with his children and watching sports on television. One of the biggest joys in his life was spending time with his grandchildren, Fallon and Abby. He also enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets, collecting Jewel-T dishes, and driving around Aurora in his S-10 pickup.
