Richard Hauf - January 20, 2013Richard Hauf, 76, of Aurora, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Hamilton Manor.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton. Pastor Jim Gruber will officiate. Richard Lavern Hauf, son of William and Thora (Christenson) Hauf, was born in Orchard on Sept. 19, 1936.
He grew up in Orchard and attended school through the 8th grade. Dick then helped his father out on the family farm. He went to California for several years to work before returning to Norfolk in 1961.
On Feb. 25, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carole M. Uttecht at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Dick worked as a mechanic for the Volkswagen and Ford Dealerships in Norfolk. In 1974, they moved to Aurora, where Dick opened a shop with his brother, Jim, called D & J Auto Repair. They sold the shop in 1985 and Dick opened Hauf’s Radiator & Auto Repair from his home. He retired in 2009 due to his health.
Dick loved fishing, hunting and camping. He loved teaching his grandchildren these hobbies as well. Dick liked stock car racing. He loved playing lead guitar in the band, Rhythm Valley Rangers, with his brother Jim and then he put together his own band. The band played at dances, reunions and weddings all over Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas. Dick was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Orville, Lawrence and Donald Hauf; and four sisters, Anna Henry, LaVerna Aughe, Dorothy Miller and Myra Allemang.
Survivors include his wife, Carole Hauf of Aurora; four children, Lynn Lorraine Kraft and special friend, Jeff Bernhardt of Clay Center, Penny Melissa Hauf of Hastings, Susan Christine (Tom) Penner of Aurora and David Richard Hauf of Aurora; seven grandchildren, Amanda Kaye Gangwish of Reno, Nev., Ethan Troy Gangwish of Reno, Nev., Alex Lee Heiden of Aurora, Aaron Michael Heiden of Aurora, Brianna Melissa Shelton of St. Joseph, Mo., Carli Jean Hauf of Grand Island and Logan Richard Hauf of Grand Island; a great-grandson, Zachary Taylor Carpenter; brother, Jim Hauf of Texas; special friends, Randi and Will and many nieces and nephews.
