Leif Hermansen - September 21, 2012Leif Hermansen, 93, of Aurora, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kronborg. Rev. Brian Krause will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Leif Hermansen, son of Thomas S. and Clara (Rasmussen) Hermansen, was born at Nysted on Aug. 29, 1919.
Leif was baptized and confirmed at St. Peder’s Lutheran Church in Nysted and attended school at District #74 in Howard County. Leif moved with his family to Texas in 1936. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940. Leif was at Normandy, Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the American Defense Service Medal, the EAME Campaign Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 4, 1945. Leif then attended winter school at Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa. He returned to Kronborg in 1946 to farm with his brother Rex.
Leif was united in marriage to Sena Smith on Dec. 24, 1952 in Lincoln. They lived and farmed near Hampton for many years. During this time Leif and Sena taught many young men how to “put in a hard days work.” Sena died on Feb. 26, 2004.
Leif was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He served on the Church Council and managed St. John’s Cemetery Board for over 40 years. He volunteered at the Agricultural Building at the Plainsman Museum for many years. His hobbies were wine making, playing cards, pool, bowling and shuffleboard. Sena and Leif enjoyed traveling, which included numerous trips to Denmark.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and wife; two brothers, Rex and Kermit Hermansen; and three sisters, Selma Sorensen, Alpha Christensen and Shirley Andersen.
Survivors include his sister, Barbara Handrup of Aurora; two sisters-in-law, Marge Smith of Aurora and Charlene Hermansen of Cassville, Mo. and many nieces and nephews and their families.
