Emma Jane Bowers` - September 12, 2012

Emma Jane Peterson Bowers, of Aurora, formerly of Central City and Hordville, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Cole Fowler officiating. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mamre Evangelical Free Church Cemetery.

Emma Jane was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Copeland, Kan., to Frank F. and Goldie C. (Burk) Wynn. Her family moved to California when Emma Jane was a young girl and she graduated from Inglewood High School in Los Angeles. Emma Jane continued her education through night courses at a business school. In 1941, she returned to Kansas and lived in Copeland and Dodge City where she worked at Eckles Department Store and Howard House Restaurant.
On June 19, 1955, Emma Jane was united in marriage to Harlan E. Peterson in Wichita, Kan. and they made their home in the Polk and Hordville area where they farmed. Harlan died on Feb. 6, 1989. Emma Jane continued to live on the farm near Hordville. On October 17, 1992, she married Lloyd K. Bowers in Central City. Emma Jane went to live at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora in 2000 and to Memorial Community Care in Aurora in 2008.
Emma Jane was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City and the United Methodist Women in Polk. She and Lloyd enjoyed attending country music festivals and traveling. In 1987, the Harlan and Emma Jane Peterson Scholarship was established for area students who chose to pursue a career in teaching.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Bowers of Aurora; her stepchildren, Sue Schultz of Aurora and Jim Bowers of Mr. Vernon, Wash.; three step-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews, Jeff Wynn and Cindy Walker both of Mulvane, Kan.; Larry Wynn of Colvich, Kan.; Randy Kaplin of Tulsa, Okla.; Roxie Montague of Reed City, Mich.; and Gary Kaplin of Bel Aire, Kan.
Emma Jane was preceded in death by her first husband, Harlan; her parents; one brother, Frazier Wynn; one sister, Catherine Kaplin; and one niece, Judy Kaplin.
