Ralph L.W. Schmidt - May 01, 2009

Former Hampton resident Ralph L.W. Schmidt, Ph.D., Colonel, U.S. Army (retired), a resident of Baton Rouge, La., died Friday, May 1, 2009, at age 89.
Funeral services were at University Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 6 with the Rev. Patti Snyder officiating.
Burial was at Port Hudson National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of Baton Rouge (www.hospicebr.org) or the National Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
He was born in Bradshaw and grew up in Hampton on his parents’ farm. He earned an undergraduate degree from York College in York, his M.S. and Ph.D. were both from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
He married his wife, Dolores, on July 4, 1945. She preceded him in death by seven months. He is also preceded in death by his parents, brother and son-in-law.
After his service in World War II, work brought Ralph and his family to Baton Rouge where he worked for LSU as a professor and dean.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Raggio and Dr. Elisabeth (Todd) Schmidt-Burks; three grandchildren, Dr. Michael (Tabitha) Raggio, Anne Raggio and Leslie Burks; four great-grandchildren.
