Joseph McCarthy - June 18, 2012Joseph Roddy McCarthy, 82, died Monday, June 18, 2012 at Omaha.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 22, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in York with the Rev. Monsignor James Reinert officiating. Military interment will be at 3 p.m. that afternoon at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Closed casket visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Metz Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the Rosary.
Memorials may be directed to the church building fund.
He was born to T.R. and Mildred (Finney) McCarthy on Nov. 18, 1929 in York. He was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, attended District 17 grade school and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1947.
He married Elaine Rossi on Aug. 18, 1956 in Welby, Colorado and they had two children, daughter Sharon M. and son Patrick F.
Joe served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954, was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years and farmed in York County throughout his life. He was the state president of the National Letter Carriers Association, AFL-CIO, a member of American Legion Post #19, The Forty & Eight - Lincoln Voiture, and the Knights of Columbus. He raised cattle through 4-H, was the 1948 York County 4-H King, the 1950 Nebraska Baby Beef Champion and showed at the National 4-H Club Congress, Chicago, Ill. in 1950. He returned to raising cattle in his retirement. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s parish his entire life.
He is survived by daughter Sharon of Pittsburgh, Pa. and son Patrick (Renae) of Omaha; sisters Lucille (Don) Spielman, Omaha, Mary Jane (John) Broderick, Plymouth, Mich., Peggy (Tom) Haun (Portland, Ore., Connie Dugan, New Bern, N.C. and brother James McCarthy, Campbell, Calif.; grandchildren: Ashley McCarthy of Eau Claire, Wisc., Sean McCarthy of Ames, Iowa, Kyle McCarthy of Aurora, Brendan and Rory McCarthy of Pittsburgh, Pa.; brothers-in-law Vincent (Mary), Joseph (Barbara), and Alfred (Connie)Rossi of Denver, Colo.; sister-in-law Veronica (Chuck) Mitchell of Plano, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and nephews David Rossi, James Spielman and Daniel Bevelheimer.
