Kathryn Holmberg - May 29, 2012Kathryn Caroline Holmberg, 85, of Grand Island died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, in Grand Island.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Evangelical Free Church Chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Curtis Holzworth and Rev. Gary Schulte officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday. A time of fellowship will follow at Monroe Evangelical Free Church.
Visitation will be Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. until services at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island or the donor’s choice. Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Kathryn was born March 25, 1927 at the family home in rural Waverly, the daughter of Einar and Ida (Johnson) Holmberg. She grew up in the Phillips area, attending District 59 Country School graduating from Phillips High School with the class of 1944. She attended Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney. She taught in rural Hamilton County Schools prior to moving to Grand Island
Kathryn was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company/Century Link, retiring with 37 years of service in Grand Island. She enjoyed baking recipes from her Swedish heritage an especially sharing time with her family and friends over food and coffee. She enjoyed traveling with her family to visit their homeland country of Sweden as well as, visiting many areas of the United States with family and friends..
Kathryn was an active member of Evangelical Free Church serving in both children’s and women’s ministries, and was an original member of the Singing Christmas Tree Choir. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and volunteered in several Grand Island community organizations.
Survivors of the immediate family include a sister, Ingred Hedlund, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother and his wife, Don and Marilyn Holmberg of Stromsburg; two sisters-in-law, Pat Holmberg of Aurora and Doris Wolters of Tuscon, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Norman, Gerald and Marvin Holmberg; sister, Margit Wagner; infant sister, Marian Virginia; and brothers in law, John Hedlund, and Art Wagner.
