Merle Otto Goertzen was born Nov. 25, 1928 on a farm south of Hampton, the first son of John B. and Katherine Goertzen.
He went to Hampton and Henderson schools for his education. He was also self-taught in many areas.
He met the love of his life, Adella Lucille, in the Henderson Mennonite Church in Henderson. They were married Aug. 3, 1948, in Hillsboro, Kan. and celebrated 57 years of marriage before Adella Lucille passed away in 2005. They were farmers in Nebraska for many years. They retired to Sweet Home, Ore., in 1999 to be near their daughter, Frances.
They were blessed with three daughters, Frances Mae, married to Mike Wilson, Beverly Ann, married to Les Valentine, and Sharon Kay and special friend, Todd Lingo; four grandchildren, Jeff Goertzen, Kurt Becker, Mary Rose Valentine, Amy Ann Valentine and two deceased grandchildren, JoVanna Becker and Bob Valentine; eight great-grandchildren.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Glen Goertzen; sister, Lilah Schultz and son-in-law, Russ Becker.
His love was Gospel music and his cups of coffee. And he never met a stranger.
