Dorothy Eaton - January 17, 2012Dorothy Eaton, 87, died Jan. 17, 2012 at Crestview Care Center, Columbia Heights, Minn.
A memorial service was held to honor her life at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights, Minn., on Jan. 22.
Dorothy Elaine Poissant was born Sept. 5, 1924 in Devils Lake, N.D., to Theodore and Esther Kunkel Poissant. She attended school in Lakota, N.D. and graduated from Devils Lake High School.
Dorothy married Rev. Gerhard Walter in 1942 in Devils Lake, N.D. After her husband’s death in 1954, while serving St. Matthew Church in Columbia Heights, Dorothy returned to North Dakota with her children.
Dorothy graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing in 1960. Her nursing career was spent in Grand Forks until her retirement in 1985. Dorothy was passionate about the many facets of health care. She was very involved with the chaplains coursework at the hospitals where she worked. The last years of her nursing career were spent teaching LPNs at United Hospital. After retiring she discovered that she missed the hospital and joined the staff as a volunteer. She also worked in the patient representative program.
Dorothy was very active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She attended many state and national conferences and also was a delegate to the International Convention in 1991.
Dorothy married Lloyd Eaton of Aurora, Neb., on Aug. 21, 1981. They enjoyed traveling, gardening, and camping. They hosted many family gatherings and loved their summers as camp host at North Dakota State Parks. They often included their grandchildren on their camping trips.
Dorothy and Lloyd relocated to Columbia Heights, Minn., after the flood of 1997. They lived at the Crestview Community where they continued to enjoy church, gardening, and friends. They were blessed by the fellowship at St. Matthew Church.
Survivors include her son Paul (Lucinda) Walter, Green Valley, Ariz.; grandchildren Donald (Kelly) Walter, Anoka, Minn., Travis Walter, Tuscon, Ariz., Laura Walter, Chicago, Ill., and Lucas Walter Neumann, Mayville, N.D.; great-grandchildren Rachael and Kyle Walter; daughters-in-law Barbara Walter of California and Cheryl Walter Neumann of Cavalier, N.D.; brother Robert (Bonnie) Poissant of Manning, S.C.; sister Marion Overboe of Devils Lake, N.D.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, sons Douglas Walter and Donald Walter; daughter Genine Walter; brother Wauburn Poissant and sister Rosella Halsey.
