Theodora Marie Schumann was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Hall County to Albert Theodore and Frieda (Buckow) Schumann. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith as a child. She was a life-long member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Wood River, the Platt-Duetsche Society, and served on the board of directors of the Good Samaritan Society in Wood River.
Theodora grew up north of Wood River. At the age of 7, her father died and the family moved to the Grand Island area where she completed 10th grade. On Feb. 21, 1940, she married Paul Thesenvitz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple made their home on a farm south of Wood River on Shoemaker Island. She loved caring for her roses. She had a ritual of fertilizing and trimming, and she knew the variety of all of her 40 plus roses. She loved sharing them with family and friends.
On the farm it was always “five square meals” per day, breakfast, coffee, dinner, lunch and supper. Whenever anyone came to visit, the coffee pot went on and the cookies come out. Everyone enjoyed her wonderful pies, angel food cakes and traditional family recipes that she shared often. Over the years she was featured in local papers and cook books.
In 1979, they moved from the farm into Wood River where she continued her love of flowers and gardening. In addition she also enjoyed doing ceramics, crocheting, sewing, playing cards, Bible study and especially the time she shared with her family and friends.
Survivors include daughter, Shari Burling of Aurora; son, Wayne Thesenvitz of Wood River; and daughter-in-law Gloria Thesenvitz of Grand Island. Grandchildren, Teresa and Joe Grabowski, Scott and Lori Thesenvitz, Jennifer Roberts and Gary Thesenvitz. Great-grandchildren are Jordyn and Taylor Grabowski, Kaitlyn, Madison and Jace Thesenvitz and Ava and Emma Roberts, two nephews, Glen Schumann and family and Howard Schumann, and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who died in 2010; her father, Albert Theodore Schumann; her mother and stepfather, Frieda and Gus Baasch; and a brother, Herman Schumann.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Grace Lutheran Church of Wood River or the donor’s choice.
