Sylvia Miller - September 07, 2011Sylvia Miller, 94, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Aurora United Methodist Church in Aurora. Pastor Mary Scott will officiate. Private Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Sylvia Leona Miller, daughter of Joseph and Elsie Mabel (Tucker) Piggott, was born near Aurora on Aug. 30, 1917.
She grew up in rural Aurora and attended District 10 during grades 1 through 8. Sylvia graduated from Stockham High School in 1934. Following her graduation she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year and then for many summers in order to received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1965.
Sylvia was united in marriage to Emil Miller on June 22, 1940 at the Gretna Green Chapel in Yuma, Ariz.
She taught 12 years in rural schools in Hamilton County. For the next 31 years Sylvia taught in the Aurora Public Schools in which the first year she taught 5th and 6th grade, then 3rd grade for the next 13 years and the last 17 years she taught special reading for grades 1 through 6.
Sylvia was a member of the Aurora Education Association, Nebraska State Teachers Association, National Education Association and the Retired Teachers Association. She served in various committees and held office in the local organizations. Sylvia was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary teachers society since 1958. She also volunteered her time in tutor services to the Adult Basic Education and inter-generational services to the Head-Start Program in Aurora.
She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and was active in the Dorcas Circle. Sylvia loved being a part of the quilters group at the church and helping out in the nursery.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; granddaughter, Natalie Ross; sister, Kathleen Wilcox; sisters-in-law, Christina Schaffert and Leona Miller; and brothers-in-law, Roy, Alfred, Kenneth and Edward Miller.
Survivors include her daughters, Eunice Miller of Hunt, Texas and Emily (Fred) Saylors of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Craig (Vernette) Ayers, Kimbery Ayers, Todd (Beth) Ross, Deborah (Robert) Locke, Leasha (Mark) Franklin, Lonnie (Kacee) Saylors, Lindy (Jot) Hardie and Sofie (Daniel) Calderon; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; brother, Joe (Virginia) Piggott of Alabama; sisters-in-law, Pauline McConaughey of Aurora and Vivian Miller. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
