Bernie Pieko - June 25, 2011Bernhard H. “Bernie” Pieko, 62, of Chapman, died at his home on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Donna Carpenter officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Chapman Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post Six in Central City. Memorials are suggested to the Education Fund for his daughter. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.
Bernie was born on Feb. 18, 1949, in Hannover, Germany, to Herbert W. and Margarete (Mast) Pieko. When he was 3 years old, his family immigrated to the United States and made their home in Iowa. For several years, the family lived in Hamburg and Shenandoah.
Bernie began his schooling at a country school near Shenandoah and then at the Shenandoah Schools. They moved to Papillion, Neb., and then in 1964, they came to live in Central City. Bernie graduated from Central City High School in 1967.
On April 9, 1969, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Bernie was honorably discharged on Nov. 18, 1970. He returned to Nebraska and received his degrees in electronic technology and radio broadcast technology from Central Community College in Hastings. Bernie made his home near Chapman and worked for International Sensors in Aurora for many years.
Bernie enjoyed fishing, barbecuing, playing the guitar, working on his home and watching Nebraska football.
Survivors include his partner, Sue Sheeks and daughter Maggie, both of Chapman; sister, Irene (Bob) Hallgren of Papillion; his nieces and nephews, Ken Bigley, Wendy Harris, Russell Bigley and Dawn Shannon; mother-in-law, Vi Sheeks of Grand Island; and father-in-law, Jim Sheeks of Cairo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Bernhard James, and sister Elizabeth Pieko.
