Donald D. Lundquist, 91 of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Jim Garfield officiating. Inurnment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation hours will be Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Shiner’s Hospital For Children.
Donald D. Lundquist was born Aug. 4, 1919 in Hamilton County, the son of Oscar A. and Eva (Anderson) Lundquist. He grew up in Aurora, graduating from Aurora High School in 1936. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, Aug. 25, 1936, serving during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters for the last part of the war. He also served on the U.S.S. Arizona, U.S.S. Ward and U.S.S. Blue during World War II. He commissioned as Lieutenant J.S. He was on the Naval Ship the U.S.S. Forest that was the first to enter Tokyo Bay and fire upon Japanese soil. He also attended George Washington University through the Navy. He received his honorable discharge on Aug. 13, 1946.
He married Alma DeSoe on Dec. 26, 1941 in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island where he was a salesman for Thompson Auto Supply for more than 39 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, Tin Can Sailors, Ship Reunions, Eagle’s Club, Ashlar Masonic Lodge AF & AM, Central Nebraska Shrine Club, Scottish Rite and Tehama Shrine Temple in Hastings.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, entering contests and sweepstakes, and was an avid football fan.
Survivors include his wife, Alma, of Grand Island; one daughter, Cheryl L. (Duaine) Nelson of Grand Island; two grandsons, Michael E. Nelson and Troy D. and Tammy Nelson, both of Grand Island; great grandchildren, Shane, Michaelia and Shaun Nelson, Natasha Heglund and Kacera Nelson; four great-great grandchildren, Briana Montgomery, Kilee Nelson, Joziah Montgomery and Jaslynn Heglund; one sister, Doris Wade of Tuscon, Ariz.; two brothers, Lynn Lundquist of Lakewood, Colo. and Oscar A. (Roma) Lundquist, Jr. of Aurora; three sisters-in-law, Mary Lundquist of Albuquerque, N.M., Alice Howard of Perry, Fla., Lorene Keller of Grand Island; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George M. Lundquist, Homer O. Lundquist and Robert E. Lundquist; two sisters, Evelyn Salleng and Lunette H. Lundquist.
