Ruth Peterson - January 04, 2011Former Phillips resident Ruth I. Peterson, 91, of Grand Island died Jan. 4, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with the Rev. Randy Fett officiating. Burial will be in Phillips Cemetery, Phillips. Visitation hours will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Peterson was born April 2, 1919 in Detroit, Mich. the daughter of Richard H. and Annetta M. (Welker) Kraft. The family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin when she was in the fifth grade. She graduated from Riverside High School, Milwaukee in 1937. While attending high school she was also enrolled in the evening classes at Spencerian Business College in Milwaukee.
She was united in marriage to Earl P. Tolles on Oct. 15, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa. The couple resided in Milwaukee then moved to McCool Junction, Neb. and later to Bremerton, Wash., where she was employed at the U.S. Navy Yard in Puget Sound for two years as a secretary. They moved back to Milwaukee where she worked for GMAC. In 1951 they moved to Grand Island where she was employed in the office at the Ordnance Plant. Mr. Tolles died in 1960. She worked for 6-1/2 years as secretary to Pastor Clark at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. She was married to Dr. Rudolph Kahman on Aug. 12, 1961 in Grand Island. Dr. Kahman died on May 12, 1997. She married Derild W. Peterson on Feb. 24, 1998 in Grand Island. The couple resided in Phillips until moving to Lakeview Nursing Home in 2008.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include her husband, Derild W. Peterson; one sister, Doris Church; stepchildren and their spouses, Don and Ella Peterson, Marsha and Kern Petersen, Ruth Ann and Greg Peitz, Jane and John Cooley, Andrea and Greg Fowler, and Stephen and Devona Marshall; one niece, Donna Laffin; and one grandniece, Leslie Anne Laffin.
Her husbands, Earl Tolles and Dr. Rudolph Kahman preceded her in death.
