Betty McDonald - December 12, 2010

Betty J. McDonald, 84, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Jonathan Sorensen will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Betty was born March 7, 1926 at Kearney, the daughter of Adolph and Mamie (Klein) Rohrich.
Betty grew up and received her education at Wood River, graduating valedictorian with the Class of 1944. She attended Teachers College and taught school for three years.
Betty married Charles “Shorty” McDonald on May 21, 1947 at Wood River. The couple farmed near Wood River for 11 years, moving to a farm near Phillips until their retirement. They moved to Grand Island in 1989.
Betty was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island and the Platt Duetsch Ladies Aid. She also volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center. Betty enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing the piano and dancing at the Platt Duetsch. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charles “Shorty” McDonald; her children and their spouses, Donald (Luanne) McDonald of Grand Island, Randall (Teresa) McDonald of Phillips, Dianne (Robert) Jones of Ardmore, Okla., and Rosemary (Joe) Johns of Phillips; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Inez Rohrich of Wood River and sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Riley Sterling of Arizona; six grandchildren, Brett and Melissa McDonald, Cortney and Travis Casteel, Tara, Tyler and Troy McDonald, and Garret Johns; four step grandchildren, Troy Jones, Rob Jones, Cheri Auletta and Jennifer Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Ella, Macy, and Evan Charles McDonald and Blake Casteel and 12 step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
